About this deal

The UVA/UVB protection of natural zinc pairs with vitamin E to keep skin feeling soft. Plus, it's gentle enough for sensitive skin. Caitlyn Martyn is a commerce writer on staff at Byrdie, where she covers all things beauty and style. She is obsessed with sunscreen and hasn’t gone a day without her Supergoop! Mattescreen in over two years. She’s an acne-prone, sensitive skin girlie herself, so she knows a thing or two about finding the right mineral sunscreen that’ll suit your skin.

Dr. Kim highly recommends this product: “It’s very liquid-y and comes in a shaker. It dispenses really easily and it blends in pretty well—plus a small amount shields the whole face.” It’s also tinted, which should help prevent a stark white cast.

There’s no debate that sunscreen is one of the most crucial products for your skin—and overall health. But when you haven’t found one that works with your skin type or tone, sits well underneath the makeup you might be wearing, or is simply a pain to apply, it’s easy to get frustrated and skip it altogether. (Trust us, we’ve been there too.) Per the tinted part, this option comes in four shades: light, medium, medium/deep, and deep. This is a huge pro, as many tinted sunscreens—including my daily go-to that I’ve used for years—only come in one shade that claims to be “universal,” yet often isn’t. (More importantly, there aren’t a ton of tinted sunscreens to be found at the drugstore in general.) I received both the light and medium; my skin is fair with a lot of warm and yellow undertones, and I found the medium to be an almost perfect match. While I can’t say with complete confidence these four shades work on everyone, the two I tried did seem to be versatile (I could’ve gotten away with the light had I wanted to) so I do think the range is fairly inclusive. As my dad noted, Aveeno has doubled down on oat flour as a main ingredient in many of its products, including the Aveeno Moisturizing Bar for Dry Skin I reviewed a few months ago. Aveeno Positively Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 review

Dr. Mona Gohara is an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine and a board-certified dermatologist in Hamden, Connecticut. She specializes in skin of color, medicinal dermatology, and surgical dermatology. Tinted mineral sunscreen for face with broad spectrum SPF 30 blends into skin to help protect against UV damage and A welcome addition to any beach bag or on-the-go makeup kit, this brush-on SPF is great for sunscreen touch-ups on both bare skin and on top of a full face of makeup. So, you already applied your morning SPF, but now it’s midday and you’ve been out and about. Pull out this powder for easy reapplication—without messing up any makeup you might be wearing. “This translucent powder brush offers broad-spectrum SPF 50+ protection, and I find it very handy when I’m outside longer than I expected or end up in the window seat on planes,” says Dr. Lee. “It also serves as a blotting or finishing powder on humid days or after a sweaty sprint between meetings.”

You can see that Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Dry Touch Sunscreen was not listed in this pamphlet, perhaps because it offers similar protection to Aveeno’s Positively Mineral Sunscreen, and Aveeno only wanted to feature sunscreens that didn’t perform as well as this particular product. Just a guess. The Neutrogena Purescreen+ Mineral UV Tint Face Liquid Sunscreen is a cosmetically elegant mineral sunscreen that’s an especially great option if you have sensitive skin. While it isn’t super hydrating, it is very lightweight and layers beautifully under makeup. I found it to be an excellent, all-around daily sunscreen (or a good option for beach or pool days, given its water-resistance) at an impressive and very wallet-friendly price point. Why Trust Byrdie When it comes to sunscreen, the absolute most important thing is that you’re using one. It’s imperative that you find a sunscreen you like, you’re actually going to use, and that’s proven effective. But how do you do that? Well, for starters, decide between a mineral or a chemical sunscreen.

Here’s what he had to say. My Dad the Chemist’s review of Neutrogena vs. Aveeno Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50

As far as the texture goes, this is marketed as being very lightweight and I’d completely agree with that. My skin veers toward dry most of the time, and, if anything, I wanted this to be slightly richer and more moisturizing. The formulas I gravitate towards are usually a bit creamier and allow me to get away without moisturizer. When I applied this on completely bare skin, I found I definitely needed a layer of moisturizer underneath. The sunscreen went on a bit smoother and blended in more easily when my skin was more hydrated. But, if your skin is oily or combination, you may very well feel differently. Again, the best mineral sunscreen is the one that you’re actually going to use (and reapply, ideally every two hours!). “There’s nothing that damages the skin as much as the sun,” Dr. Kim says. Sure, your SPF can stave off premature aging and dark spots, but let’s not forget the main reason why we need and love it: It is one of the best tools we have to prevent skin cancer.
