The plot of this book was kind of confusing. I'm not really sure why the Will needed to do what it does because the real world seemed fine. The weird world that Arthur goes to doesn't seem to be in the greatest of shape, but there wasn't really anything outright wrong with it, I think. The book also kind of just throws you into the world without much help, except for the info dumping that occurs sporadically, but always during or right before it's most convenient. The rules of the world don't seem to be clear and seem to allow for pretty much anything to happen, especially if it'll move the plot along.

The Administration of the Lower House was awful. By the time Lord Arthur arrived, nothing was working properly. The First Key could be separated into two parts, The Minute Key (also referred to as The Lesser Key, it can be used more often, but with less power) and The Hour Key (also referred to as The Greater Key, it can be used less than the Lesser Key, but it is stronger). When joined they become a silver sword with gold inlay. Monster Whale: Drowned Wednesday's curse turned her into a Leviathan-sized whale. In this form she's so big that she be get mistaken for an island and her Horror Hunger makes her eat people whole. Evil Is Sterile: It is mentioned that only The Architect, The Old One, or humans can create anything original. The Denizens can only copy things they've seen. This becomes important later.
I liked it, but found the world very complex and confusing and I couldn't believe that my son actually read through the detail on this. I liked that Arthur had doubts but kept trying to do the right thing even though it was hard. Some reviewers found that so much time was spent developing the world that the characters suffered and I agree to some extent. I would recommend this as YA.The substance called 'Nothing' causes damage to things in the House and ultimately wipes it out when the Will is complete. One of the Trustees, Tuesday, makes various things out of it using his Key. The Piper creates an army of so-called 'Newniths' from it.

While it seems to be a will as in testament, it ends up proving to be more along the lines of "the Architect's will be done". Mobile Shrubbery: An illusory one is used by Arthur in the Incomparable Gardens, reasoning that a walking shrub won't look out of place. Innocent Fanservice Girl: Suzy. She thinks nothing of undressing in front of Arthur, and often wears shredded or sliced-open clothing.
