About this deal

Orange liqueur– a touch of orange liqueur such as Cointreau is a nice replacement for the vermouth traditionally used in a classic martini recipe. If you leave this ingredient out, you’ve basically made a Greyhound drink instead which is just gin or vodka paired with grapefruit juice. DIRECTIONS Because I was in a floral mood, I wanted to add a little elderflower liqueur. This is an optional step, but I highly recommend it. It just gives that little hint of early summer that I love. Absolutely not soapy! I use St-Germain elderflower liqueur, but any will do. Regulations allow cordial producers creative license with not only the spirit and flavoring agent, but also how they’re incorporated. Some add flavoring agents after distillation by one of several methods. Infusion involves steeping the flavor source; maceration entails more aggressive crushing of the flavor components before steeping; percolation pumps water or spirits over the ingredients to extract flavors. Finally, flavor can be added by compounding, simply adding the flavoring extract to the spirit. Heartier flavoring agents such as seeds and flowers may be distilled along with the distillate, often for the second distillation, similar to the gin-making process.

There are a few ways you can customize this drink to suit your preferences or adjust to what you have on hand. The mimosa is named after the yellow-flowered mimosa plant, Acacia dealbata. I couldn’t figure out why, but most likely it’s the color of the drink - when it is made with the traditional orange juice. This grapefruit mimosa gets a much more beautiful, pink hue, don't you think? We say: A bittersweet refreshing drink for a summer's afternoon or an aperitif with grape and peach fruitiness and complexity courtesy of gentian and fresh mint. Do not pop the expensive stuff for a mimosa! Any cheap, but good champagne is good for a mimosa. Prosecco is the wine of choice in a bellini, while champagne is used for mimosas. We say: A fruity bittersweet aperitif with "orchard fruit, citrus and bittersweet gentian sipped through a sarsaparilla-like layer of Peychaud's Bitters." Ruby red grapefruits tend to be a bit sweeter than pink grapefruits but this can really vary fruit to fruit.

With: Vodka, Suze, bianco vermouth, sugar syrup, pink grapefruit juice, Peychaud's bitters and egg white. There are many different categories of liqueurs and the lines between these are often fluid. There are: It uses fresh blood orange juice, fresh lime juice, blanco tequila, and grapefruit liqueur (secret key ingredient!). Why you will love this recipe:

Optional garnishes include grapefruit zest, a slice of grapefruit or lime or, some fresh mint leaves. The sweetening requirement is what makes cordials distinct from dry flavored spirits such as gin. In the United States, where “cordial” and “liqueur” are used interchangeably, regulations require that they contain at least 2.5 percent sugar by weight and be made from “fruits, flowers, plants, or pure juices therefrom, or other natural flavoring materials, or with extracts” of those materials. In Europe, cordials refer to non-alcoholic drinks. We use the terms based on U.S. regulations.
