About this deal

Congratulations on your gold medal, which was well deserved. I watched your presentation on the BBC and absolutely loved your gorgeous lilies. Unfortunately my beautiful lilies have been decimated by the wretched lily bettle. I was even thinking about getting rid of all my bulbs after experiencing this problem for the last 3 years. Once you have removed all sight of the beetles, then you can start spraying ensuring to spray under the leaves as well. The spray makes the foliage taste bitter so the lily beetles won't like the taste. I would advise spraying your lilies once a week and spray again if it rains. Hope this helps. Try to plant your lilies where they will dry out after rain to prevent Botrytis, a fungus that spots the leaves. If you do see brown spots on your leaves, spray with a fungicide recommended for roses. This specific mix of calcium and adjuvant only works to keep away grazing pests when it is applied to the photosynthesising leaves, stems or flowers of any plant, thereby interacting with the plant’s own metabolic processes.

Encourage wildlife in the garden, such as birds, frogs, waspsand predatory ground beetles who will eat the larvae and sometimes the adult beetles. There are three species of parasitoid wasp known to occur in Britain that feed only within the larvae of lily beetle( Lemophagus errabundus, Tetrastichus setifer and Mesochorus lilioceriphilus). Infected larvae do not survivie Pesticides The RHS recommends that you don't use pesticides. Most pesticides (including organic types) reduce biodiversity, including natural enemies, impact soil health and have wider adverse environmental effects. Always follow the instructions on the products. For edible plants, make sure the food plant is listed on the label and follow instructions on maximum number of applications, spray interval and harvest interval. After a few years of flowering, you may find your Roselilyproduces less blooms, it may be time to lift your bulbs and divide them by breaking off the bulblets. All the bulbs will then need replanting.Like all safe and good biologically-active products, this effect does not last forever, because it is a normal plant nutrient and therefore naturally dissipates within the plant. The lily beetle (Lilioceris Lilii) is the number one pest of lilies. It can reduce a lily plant to nothing in just a few days. Both the adult lily beetles and the horrible grubs devour lilies - leaves, flowers, and flower buds.

Scarlet Lily Beetle (LILIOCERIS LILII) After a few years of flowering, you may find the Oriental Trumpets Lily produces less blooms, it may be time to lift your bulbs and divide them by breaking off the bulblets. All the bulbs will then need replanting. If planting in pots, plant 3 bulbs in a 10-14" 'patio type' pot using good-quality, multi-purpose compost. Grazers is an effective and easy solution to prevent damage caused Red Lily Beetle on Lilies, Fritillaries and other members of the Liliaceae family. Description Handheld application, effective against slugs and snails Ready to Use – helping plants to help themselves against slugs & snails, whilst safe to wildlife Wow, they sound very tall. Lilies can get taller over the years once they become more mature. I would advise giving the soil a freshen up each year and try using a good multipurpose compost like John Innes No 3 which is recommended for most lilies. You can also try using a Tomato Feed on your lilies to stimulate and strengthen them. Start using it when you see signs of growth. Make up your tomato feed with half the recommended dilution (written on the instructions on the bottle) and feed once every 3 weeks.

If planting in pots, it may be an idea to tilt the pots on their side in the winter to prevent waterlog. Protect your plants by spraying with Grazers Lily Beetle Spray. Simply spray onto the foliage of the lilies and fritillaries in the spring as new growth emerges and continue to spray throughout the growing season. The spray is taken up by the plant making the foliage unpalatable to the lily beetles, so the beetles and the larvae won’t feed. Supplied as a 750ml Ready to Use Spray or as a 350ml Concentrate (makes 7 litres of spray) for use in your own sprayer or to refill the RTU Spray. How to use: Spray directly on to the foliage. When sprayed proactively every 7-10 days upon first sighting (from March onwards depending on the region and climate) plants continue to thrive, eggs are less likely to be laid and therefore larvae aren’t a problem either. Lilies and fritillaries can tolerate some damage from this insect. However in some cases plants can be stripped of all foliage which can affect the health of the bulb. The adult beetles overwinter away from host plants and so there is no suitable treatment outside of the growing season. Roselily Bulbs should be planted as soon as possible. Ideally in the Spring but can be planted up until the Autumn.Adult beetles emerge from the soil from late March to May, laying eggs from April until September. They overwinter in sheltered places, often in the soil but not always near lilies.
