About this deal

The kids fought, more interested in lunch and souvenirs than the animals, found their daddy embarrassing, and didn't bother to laugh at the daddy's attempted jokes. The protagonist himself is a character that is easily identifiable to primary school children and shows a realistic quality through the fact that children do misbehave! I enjoyed the book as it has great illustrations, the topic it covers and also because it makes children think about our relationship with animals. For example, some characters are wearing leopard print coats and tiger printed trousers, suggesting that zoos are not the only way in which we unnecessarily maltreat animals. The family is therefore lost within the zoo, which is not at all like a wilderness but functions more like a labyrinth, in which the family are on this path and must walk around and around until allowing themselves a psychological out.

The most upvoted consumer reviewers fall on a narrow spectrum between ‘I did not like this book’ and ‘I did not like this book but it’s important’.Browne ( Gorilla ; Willy the Wimp ) again exhibits his inimitable dry wit, describing a less than idyllic family outing to the zoo. Overall, I would have this book in my classroom library because it is a thought provoking story on a child’s level. Poor old mum has to endure Dad’s bad jokes and her two cheeky monkeys messing about, but they all have a good day in the end.

A chimp of no specific gender romps through two books, presenting favorite books in the first title (``books about dinosaurs and books about monsters .The boys might as well be zoo animals themselves because they are stuck in this family, forced to do whatever the adults require of them. The framed half page illustration depicts a lonely elephant in an empty, colorless room standing near its own feces. The book contains many of Doonan’s picture codes, especially the use of colour to depict emotion, and it would be interesting to discuss thesewith children to see if they can identify some of the different codes. When a very special gorilla learns to use sign language, he is able to ask his keepers for anything he needs but what he wants most of all is a friend. This fantastical picture book from 2009-2011 Children's Laureate and Hans Christian Andersen Award winner Anthony Browne is a warm and sensitive story.

Anthony Browne uses the same illustrative trick in his retelling of Hansel and Gretel, in which the stepmother EQUALS the witch. Then, on the night before her birthday, something extraordinary happens - and Hannah’s wish comes gloriously true. It is the evocative, timeless story of Sally Beck, and the circumstances which led her to become Jack, the gardener's boy, working amongst the topiary bushes of a great country house garden. The book contains a couple of great belly laughing moments that we shared in class as well as some truly sad imagery such as the tiger pacing it’s cage and the back of the gorilla huddled in the corner. WEATHER — If Browne wanted to create a genuine utopia he’d have created a blue sky with plenty of greenery, but in Zoo he does the opposite. The enthralling story of King Kong involves battles with dinosaurs, daring rescues and incredible escapes - endless thrills lead up to one of the most famous climaxes of all time! A powerful picture of a gorilla that consists of 4 framed parts captured the pain and domestic features of a gorilla’s face.

This is enforced by the use of pictures, with the children wearing monkey caps and also members of the public having animal features. As the story progresses you understand the underlying theme, which is actually about a role reversal with the people outside the cages being the animals. With spare text and haunting paintings, Browne ( Gorilla ; Willy the Wimp ) creates an intriguing fantasy about sibling rivalry transformed by experience.
