Thrown together with a capricious upperclassman who seems determined to keep her at arm’s length, she soon finds herself venturing down a rabbit-hole of deeply buried institutional secrets.
But Delaney and Colton discover the cost of opening the doors between worlds when they find themselves up against something old and nameless, an enemy they need to destroy before it tears them – and their forbidden partnership – apart. Writing: As I said, it was beautiful, but it was also not great at a lot of points, when the scenes shifted. We’ll start with a positive first; it’s refreshing to have a deaf main character in a book that’s written by a deaf author.Lane draws the reader’s empathy immediately, carrying the novel through sections of mystery where it’s unclear what everything means.
I do wish the main character had a little more depth to her (and to not be compared to glass so much). The only reason why I realized I hadn’t actually missed her introduction is because in this scene we get a physical description of Adya, which led me to (correctly) assume it was her 1st time on page.and 2) the 1st time we see said roommate we don’t even get an introduction – she is just thrown into the story! I loved reading about a Deaf main character who is drawn to the darkness—the concept was so cool, but. The relentless rain and overpowering tropical vegetation create a dark atmospheric Aussie noir tale. She’s Deaf, and though she has CIs (cochlear implants) reading lips is part of conversation for her too. I loved how the secrets aren't revealed all at once at the end, but distilled throughout the novel and once it's confirmed it's not exactly shocking but I thought it was smartly done: it avoids the "hey got you" that so many authors seem to like but few manage to do well, i really felt like it was mature and so so enjoyable.
Certain lines are so expressive and eloquent that you want to pause and reread them, just to feel the true weight of the words and their meaning. I absolutely loved the main character who is deaf and feels like she never belongs and Colton who is so intense and full of secrets! She turns to Baz, Romie’s brother, for help—Baz was born during an eclipse, giving him unpredictable magic.
