Sardines epitomizes the group of rats who harass the humans into thinking they have a full-blown infestation. The Amazing Maurice had its premiere at the Manchester Animation Festival on 13 November 2022, and was released in the United Kingdom on 16 December, by Sky Cinema. Just one of the many hilarious lines in this family animation adapted from the Terry Pratchett children’s novel about a crew of scam artist rodents. I have found out that this is apparently his first ‘YA’ Discworld book which I hope they his adult books are much better(though I have yet to read them as of the writing of this review, so really, I have no idea). However, when peril looms, in the form of a “rat king” in the town of Bad Blintz, Maurice belatedly discovers loyalty to his squeaky buddies.The group arrive at the town of Bad Blintz for one last job only to find a town that already has a rat problem.

Of course, this is only a small slice of the star-studded pie, with names like David Tennant ( Doctor Who), Joe Sugg ( Thatcher Joe), and Rob Brydon ( Gavin and Stacey) also part of the cast. The film tells the tale of Maurice, a large talking cat, who travels from town to town offering to solve their sudden rat problem. Keith decides to stay behind as Bad Blintz's ceremonial rat piper, while Maurice moves on to find a new scheme. The best part about this book, aside from criminal talking animals, is the existential crisis all the rats are going through.Maurice the cat, thinks he is the main character, obviously, but contrary to the title, the other characters are just as amazing. When Death and the Death of Rats arrive to take Dangerous Beans and one of Maurice's lives, he successfully trades one of his lives for Dangerous Beans' life, allowing both of them to wake up. Malicia and Keith also start a relationship as they developed feelings for each other over the course of their adventure. Much as he gave a different take to MacBeth in “Wyrd Sisters,” here he gives a different take to the “Pied Piper” legend, with some fascinating reasoning and his trademarked funniness too. It is full of talking rats and a cat and also some really random and dodgy implications of magic that certainly has me interested in reading more of his works. Contrary to the contrast between adult and child markets, reflected in catalogues, The Guardian observed on the occasion of the Carnegie Medal that "[t]he main audience for Pratchett's 48 books, all busily in print, is teenagers, who are drawn by his irrepressible invention and sense of mischief.
As Maurice and the rats battle for their very survival, a number of provocative themes surface: life after death, good versus evil, and the sacrifice of the few for the many. This happened to be my first Pratchett book and why I did not love it, I still found myself greatly enjoying it whilst I read it. The rat catchers have created a powerful rat king named Spider, which is the source of the mysterious voice that has been plaguing the rats and Maurice.
