About this deal

This agreement ended the most serious incursion into Spartan territory since their expansion in the seventh and eighth centuries BC. According to Byzantine sources, some parts of the Laconian region remained pagan until well into the 10th century. The Spartan population was hard to maintain due to the constant absence and loss of the men in battle and the intense physical inspection of newborns.

Full citizen Spartiates were barred by law from trade or manufacture, which consequently rested in the hands of the Perioikoi. Plutarch also states that Spartans treated the helots "harshly and cruelly": they compelled them to drink pure wine (which was considered dangerous – wine usually being cut with water) ". In 1904, the British School at Athens began a thorough exploration of Laconia, and in the following year excavations were made at Thalamae, Geronthrae, and Angelona near Monemvasia. e. those who did not have citizen rights and paid for the right to reside in Athens, numbered a further 70,000, whilst slaves were estimated at between 150,000 to 400,000. The fleet was commanded by navarchs, who were appointed for a strictly one-year term, and apparently could not be reappointed. The last revival of the Spartan naval power was under Nabis, who created a fleet to control the Laconian coastline with aid from his Cretan allies.

Helots are unique in the history of slavery in that, unlike traditional slaves, they were allowed to keep and gain wealth. Only native Spartans were considered full citizens and were obliged to undergo the training as prescribed by law, as well as participate in and contribute financially to one of the syssitia. The Perioikoi came from similar origins as the helots but occupied a significantly different position in Spartan society. that is to say, either victorious or dead, since in battle, the heavy hoplite shield would be the first thing a fleeing soldier would be tempted to abandon –- rhipsaspia, "dropping the shield", was a synonym for desertion in the field. The Dorians seem to have set about expanding the frontiers of Spartan territory almost before they had established their own state.First, "Sparta" refers primarily to the main cluster of settlements in the valley of the Eurotas River. The boy who excelled in judgement and was most courageous in fighting was made captain of the company,” Plutarch wrote. It is believed that musical and gymnastic contests took place here, as well as the famous flogging ordeal administered to Spartan boys ( diamastigosis). The] ideals that it favors had a great part in framing the doctrines of Rousseau, Nietzsche, and National Socialism. BC, Sparta embarked on a steady expansion, first by subduing Amyclae and the other Laconian settlements.

The Spartans employed the phalanx in the classical style in a single line, uniformly deep in files of 8 to 12 men. At its peak around 500 BC, Sparta had some 20,000–35,000 citizens, plus numerous helots and perioikoi. Sparta placed the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity at the center of their ethical system. But it was a vital step toward being selected for one of the messes, the communal dining groups, and becoming a full-fledged Spartan citizen and soldier. This isolationist tendency was further reinforced by some of her allies' revolts and a great earthquake in 464, which was followed by a large scale revolt of the Messenian helots. What made Sparta's relations with her slave population unique was that the helots, precisely because they enjoyed privileges such as family and property, retained their identity as a conquered people (the Messenians) and also had effective kinship groups that could be used to organize rebellion.
