About this deal

The shoulder buttons, generally referred to as L and R, for left and right, respectively, were buttons added to the top corners of the controller. They both feature Sega-style disc-shaped direction pads with a large plus shape indicating the cardinal directions and recessed triangles indicating diagonals. You're right about it being good, I have this for the PS2 and it's the best 3rd party controller ever made for that console (it also features the patented D-Pad). The gamepads worked in DirectInput mode, letting me navigate the game's menu and map the controls as I saw fit. Pressing buttons or moving analog sticks/joystick will cause various entries in the columns to swap between on and off and fluctuate through a range of numbers.

These designs already have a built-in fanbase which knows how comfortable and ergonomic they are; there's a familiarity there that stretches back decades.

SEGA’s first “traditional” controller, the SEGA Master System Control Pad is one of the simplest on this list in terms of both design and structure. The controller housed a centered start and select with A and B buttons on the right and a directional pad on the left.

With the advent of video games, one could no longer draw a card from the top of the deck by picking it up, nor take out a mortgage on Park Place by flipping over the card. When setting up the controller, EmulationStation would prompt you to press the "A" button on your controller. If you wish, you can reconfigure this control mapping, either for all RetroArch, for a specific system, or even for a specific ROM. The Genesis gamepad is slightly tweaked, however; the USB version functions as an eight-button controller, adding shoulder buttons that weren't on the original. The M30 – which is closest to the legendary 6-button Genesis / Mega Drive controller in terms of design and layout – features a 'rolling' pad, which uses a circular design with ridges to denote the Cardinal Directions.
