About this deal

Modern boning is often made out of plastic and nylon, but higher-quality corsets are often made out of steel. When sewing these first seams, be sure to proceed slowly, ensuring that each portion is properly aligned. I always reply that, in my opinion, steel is best but sometimes I will recommend the synthetic whalebone as a suitable alternative to steel - it depends on the purpose and desired outcome. That "plastic boning" often comes in a fabric casing and is more transparent, with ridges running down the length of it.

These corsets would have a great deal of lacing, and would often be less utilitarian than their domestic counterparts. This link also includes more details on the John Cavanah dress which is pictured at the top of this blog post and dates back to a road trip to the Symington archive that I made with friends around 5 years ago. Developing your own may be complicated, but it can help you make leaps and bounds with your sewing skills.

The boning of choice for couture houses from the golden age, right up to the present day (and I supply many of them with steel boning, never plastic), is steel.Woven boning like "rigelene" is not a good boning for corsets, but it is a remarkable product for creating 3 dimensional shapes like "cages" and it is stronger than many of the woven bones on the market. As a unit, they are much stronger than the single strands, but much lighter in weight and easier to work with. I said this in 2014, and I'll say it again - read more to understand the context of why I said it and why I stand by the statement that plastic boning corrupts over time and simply does not stand up to the job.

Keep an eye out for opportunities to view extant garments (historical clothing that has survived to the modern-day), whether they be from museum viewings or from displays from clothing collections. Plastics bonded through adhesives benefit from lightweighting, improved aesthetics, corrosion protection, high bond strengths, weathering resistance, lack of sharp edges and quicker assembly times. For example, corsets that were made for sports tended to be simpler and less rigid, thus allowing for greater movement. Spiral steel provides a complete 360 range of flexibility, which allows a flexible fit and curved channels in later Victorian corset styles. Despite its name, it’s not made out of actual bone, but of keratin, which is the same material that makes up our nails.

Epoxy Adhesives: particularly one-component epoxies are not recommended for bonding plastics where in some cases, the minimum curing temperature of the epoxy resin is higher than the maximum resistance temperature of the plastic. Creating the trapeze silhouette for Dior, Saint Laurent has a rigid understructure veiled under a fly-away cage. Finally, check the pattern pieces and adjust the lines so that they flow smoothly between the pieces. Rigilene has its uses but is no good for serious dress foundations because it wont stand up to the job. Both German Plastic and Synthetic Whale Bone come packaged in 50 -100 meter spools and coil up naturally due to this. The pattern is the same as the previous one, but it has an extra step, as you’ll need to absorb the darts into the horizontal style lines.
