About this deal

You’ll need: Black leggings or tights, a leotard or t-shirt (black if possible), 2 large sheets of strong card, some foil, glue, a hole punch and some ribbon.

It was just the right length, and I was impressed that the elasticated cord I’d tied for his headdress band worked well too. When it comes to dressing up for a night out, special occasion, or the biggest event of the year, Halloween, we have you covered. Plus, if you don't have access to sewing equipment (or you just don't fancy getting out a needle and thread), this DIY Mary Nativity costume is totally no-sew! So whether they're a shepherd, a wise man, an angel, a stable animal, or they're playing a lead role of Mary or Joseph, check out our DIY Nativity costume ideas below. As with the sheep, have your child wear the black socks, plimsolls and gloves to represent the donkey’s hooves. Most of the Nativity characters that your child is likely to play are listed below, though some schools may add some more unusual characters! If your kids are doing a school Nativity, and you're lucky, the school will take care of all the costumes. I particularly loved your handwriting sections and the ‘Learning Journey’ links that you have created. If you've already got a fairy costume or tutu, fairy wings and tiara in your dressing-up box, this one's pretty easy.

For this iconic Nativity character, create a tunic from blue material, or perhaps use an old, large blue pillowcase or sheet which can be cut at the bottom and sides to make a simple tunic. Follow our other DIY Nativity costume tutorials, or exchange Christmas ideas with parents in the forum. If you've got other children who'll also be in the play, or you need costumes for a different event, check out our other tutorials on outfits for Joseph, a Shepherd, a King or Wise Man, and an Angel - and check out more of our Nativity costume tips here. For most Nativity costumes, you can get away with a tabard or a tunic to make up the base of the outfit. Then, simply use an old striped tea towel to wrap around the head; this look works for a shepherd or innkeeper costume too.

I just needed a long piece of fabric (brown duly bought), fold it over, cut a head hole, pop it over the head and then tie round the waist with a piece of cord (we don’t do belts in our house). If you don't have a suitable tea towel, try using a pashmina which can be wrapped around your child's head. Wrap a striped tea towel around your child’s head and fasten in a knot – if this proves tricky, use hair fasteners or a head band to help. Fold your fabric in half and measure it to check it's the right length and size to fit your child comfortably.
