About this deal

This ambitious novel takes us from Dublin to Bath with Clorinda Morrissey, from Bath to London and Paris with ‘the Angel of Bath’ Jane Adearne and to Borneo with Sir Ralph Savage and Edmund Ross, brother of Valentine Ross, the would be husband of Jane. Valentine Ross gets less and less likeable as the book progresses as he perceives he will not be able to control Jane. Then we meet Jane Adeane, who works as a nurse with her father and is known as ‘the Angel of the Baths’.

She is poor, yet she wants to be an independent female, not happy to be a servant, as well as with cash she receives from offering family heirloom, she establishes herself in the centre of Bathroom. There are excellent guys: Jane’s dad, Sir William, a medical professional; and Julietta’s other half, Ashton, a publisher.

Tremain has said this is a novel about the quest to find meaning in a life, and metaphors abound; in Borneo, Sir Ralph sets out to build a road across his land, but it leads nowhere, and is washed away every time the rains come. Not to mention the power the book exude in the richness of truly courageous and powerful female characters who defy the patriaarchy, society expectations and opressions! She has rooted stories of erotic obsession and transgression everywhere from Renaissance Denmark and 1860s New Zealand to 1940s Switzerland and contemporary France. Any changes made can be done at any time and will become effective at the end of the trial period, allowing you to retain full access for 4 weeks, even if you downgrade or cancel. I don’t know exactly how to evaluate this publication without drawing out a lengthy string of adjectives, however i more than happy to choose one: outstanding. The Gustav Sonata (2016), an account of a complex love between two boys, features a scene in which one describes his parents’ sex life: “They go to bed and take their clothes off and kiss and scream things out. What a rich cast of characters and broad variety of locations is here brought to life by strong characterisation and vivid description. Still, an entertaining read overall which should appeal to readers that like to slip into the Victorian world. Of them all, perhaps Clorinda’s journey was the most captivating - she is intuitive, honest with herself and others, driven to better her own and others’ lives.

His self- acknowledgment is touching when he observes the damage he has actually wrought, and also sees in it “a terrible landscape of what remained in his heart”. Beautiful narrative and also the requirement to find out how they will create made this story unputdownable for me.So first of all, I listened to it on Audible, cause hearing Katie McGrath amazing voice acting out the dialogues and everything made my whole month (I might be in love honestly). This is not like reading a novel but it's not like reading short stories either because it is a novel. Here she finds her metier and looks to becoming a part of Bath society, exercising her Celtic charms. Many thanks to Rose Tremain, Random House UK, and NetGalley for arc in exchange for my honest review.
