In the 1980s, 300,000 to 450,000 pouches were made every day, with approximately one-third of the soy used for tofu being utilized. Inari Sushi is a traditional sushi of vinegared rice tucked inside sweet and salty deep-fried tofu pockets. The sushi rice within the Inari sushi is completely surrounded by the tofu, meaning that it maintains its heat and flavor a little more. The topping combinations for this Inarizushi include corn salad and parsley, crab salad and furikake, and diced avocado and bonito flakes.

Open the package of inari pouches, and drain the liquid from the bag or can into a separate small bowl or cup. When the rice is cooked, discard the used kombu (or repurpose it to make simmered kombu) and transfer the hot cooked rice into the sushi oke. The only problem I had were the pouches, they had to be cut open and that was a very delicate job that took longer than expected. The sushi rice contrasts beautifully with the well-seasoned tofu pouches and you can never get enough of each bite!

Once boiled, squeeze the excess water out to remove as much of the oil as possible and so that the seasonings will be better absorbed. Sometimes sushi rice inside the tofu pocket is mixed with various ingredients to give additional flavors and texture.

As I previously mentioned, you can add a variety of ingredients to the sushi rice to make it more interesting. When I go back to Japan to visit my family and relatives, I always visit my favourite Uncle and Aunt who live in Ise city, Mie Prefecture. These rice-filled, deep-fried tofu pockets can be served on their own or combined with bento dishes.

Given that it's time to go back to school I thought I should give these pockets a trial run before the big day. These tofu pouches are an everyday vegetarian, vegan, and vegan dish that can be used as a portable meal. This unique flavor of tofu is created by cooking it with a sweet seasoning, and the sushi rice adds just the right amount of sweetness to it.
