About this deal

Defiance" kicks things off with Slash soloing throughout and Metallica's Robert Trujillo playing the same Fender bass that Jaco Pastorius used on Hunter's All American Alien Boy in 1976. Now with a massively successful US tour opening for sweet soul darlings Thee Sacred Souls behind him, 2023 is sure to be a propitious year for Daptone's newest signee.

Ian Hunter’s new album features Slash, Jeff Beck, Billy F

More significantly, however, is the fact that The Hoople is available in quadrophonic sound (again, for listeners with suitable audio gear). They are cut from the Andy Pearce masters that were used for the Mental Train box set and the artwork faithfullys reproduce the original LP sleeves, right down to the 'zorro' mask included with Brain Capers. Hunter even sounds as if he’s imitating Bob Dylan when he sings a line not far removed from “when I paint my masterpiece. An inveterate hard worker, Hunter took the lockdown as a creative opportunity, writing a series of new songs which he tracked in his Connecticut basement alongside his longtime collaborator, guitarist/producer/multi-instrumentalist Andy York. These will play on a normal CD player, but also on SACD players which will give listeners audiophile sound quality. Part of this must be down to his regular collaborators The Rant Band, led by longtime conspirator Andy York, who rock and swing like anything throughout, and by now can anticipate their boss's every demand.

But ultimately that’s no serious liability because as the focal point of the project, Ian Hunter evinces a stubborn independence that overrides this album’s slight blemishes. DEFIANCE PART 1 is a full-speed-ahead rock ‘n’ roll record rarely heard in this day and age, recorded with a crew of irrefutable rock ‘n’ roll all-stars and released on the definitive rock ‘n’ roll label. Part of it must also be the respect for Hunter, who has defied the laws of space and time all his life. Brian Quincy Newcomb has found work as rock critic and music journalist since the early 80's, contributing over the years to Billboard Magazine, Paste, The Riverfront Times, and The St. No Hard Feelings” with Johnny Depp and the late Jeff Beck, is beautiful, while most of Stone Temple Pilots give the brilliantly acerbic “Pavlovs Dog” a stomping rock n roll flavour.Fellow octogenarian Ringo Starr (82) keeps the beat on the following “Bed of Roses” which pounds out with the force of the best Mott grinders as guitarist Mike Campbell provides gutsy six-string support. Mott The Hoople's legendary show at London's Hammersmith Odeon in December 1973 has been issued on 180g vinyl.

After those years with Ralphs, Hunter spent considerable time with Mick Ronson has his guitar slinger of choice, but the performances throughout this newest release are next level from start to finish. It runs to 464 pages, and will be published by Omnibus Press in February 2021 (having been put back from mid-November).A routinely great artist, much of Sufjan's universal appeal comes from his skills as a gifted narrator, pairing personal musings on love and devotion with commentary on American culture, whilst welding folk and electronica, the ambient and existential.

Omg I love Ian from Mott the Hoople, the man is a genius he should be in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. That’s typical of what the record does, in that it doesn’t sound like anything else here, yet Hunter is the golden thread. Even Slash, whose guitar explodes with shards of gritty angst, and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo’s pummeling bottom (just a few of the superstar guests), can’t obscure Hunter’s restricted range as he rages I’m still flying by the seat of my pants. With his mind still agile, his piano playing still on top form and his voice still strong, Defiance Part 1 makes a nonsense of that.

Obviously the Ranters are bummed out as is Morgan ’n’ the Great Ariel Bender, to say nothing of the crew and business people involved. He hit the strings on his guitar, laid it on the floor, had the amp cranked and left his studio – and left it on for days.
