About this deal

But faking an epic love story to fool history brings with it complications neither of them anticipated, including the very real feelings they begin to have for each other, which become increasingly difficult to turn off when they’re away from their captive audience. But to her father, Zeus, a wrathful god terrified of having his power usurped, it was the worst possible answer she could have given. So in a reversal of the traditional myth, she goes to the Underworld of her own accord, seeing it as the only place to escape from marriage: “Mother owns the land. I didn't have the heart to hate it as I had loved some aspects of the story, but I also can't say that I fully loved it either.

I wonder if her lessons will ever sink in or if they’ll forever ring through my mind in her voice, oil on water, condemning my actions without ever helping me stop doing the things that so annoy her. It was an easy read, it was fast paced, I stayed engaged throughout, and it made the mythology very accessible. Even then it’s not powerful enough to protect you, because Zeus gave all the more powerful things to men. I've only read chapter 1 but I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favourite books this year. The addition of completely new characters like Tempest offered a strong supporting cast that made this book stand out in creativity from the rest. In addition, Demeter was much older than Hades (as they were regurgitated at different times), which meant that he didn’t really know Demeter (nor was related to her) and was thus, much closer in age to Persephone.

Yet the more serious sides of the book – the themes of toxic masculinity and coercive control – never feel too heavy either. She's a badass main character while we get a more soft boy Hades which I adored with my whole heart. It felt like I was constantly being told that Demeter has been horrible to her daughter and Hades loves art. A cracking debut, in my humble opinion, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for Bea FitzG in the future. But seeking sanctuary with Hades - God of the Underworld - has unforeseen consequences and Kore discovers not only an unlikely alliance, but becomes the great Persephone, chaos bringer.Even as their alliance dissolves into friendship, friendship blurring into something deeper, she stills struggles to understand that he’s not trying to trick or weaken her. I’d normally be too impatient to wait for it to cool down, burning my fingers as I tear into chunks.

To escape an arranged, and possibly incestuous, marriage, Kore - repressed daughter of Zeus - escapes to the pits of hell. It turns the myth on its head in a totally fitting way whilst also drawing parallels with modern day issues of misogyny, toxic masculinity and self determination. As for Persephone, we really saw a woman find her footing in HER realm - the fact the underworld also belonged to her in key to that statement. Plus, Hades was a perfect golden retriever partner who helped push her forward without holding her back. And when she meets the rude and annoying ruler of the underworld she traps him into giving her shelter and time find a way out of the marriage that’s waiting for her. I most definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a unique original spin on the story of Hades and Persephone.
