About this deal

The books in this series can definitely be read alone but it’s still good to see a group of authors working together to make a series along the same theme. Meanwhile, UW has quarters and doesn’t start classes until the end of September (or beginning of October even).

Trust is such a fragile thing for many of us and the hairline cracks when it is broken are impossible to gloss over. That sub-plot took a wonderful twist and while at the end, I was still questioning some of the actions a bit, I really liked it. We also see what Rachel’s life was like before Jack, when she was working I the hospital, this strand takes a while before the relevance of this becomes clear, but all is revealed later Beyond that I can’t say anything about the plot because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone else. What follows is a suspicious Rachel, crossing quite a few ethical boundaries, to find out more about her beau. The plot moved quickly but took the time to savor the romance part of the love story, and the central relationship was well developed and thoughtful.Narrated over two timelines, the present day and one year previously, Rachel and Jack are seven-months into their affair with an unplanned, but not unwanted, pregnancy already at the three-months stage. I was especially touched by Hubbard's tacit acknowledgement that just because an individual is wealthy, it doesn't mean that their lives at the nursing home are any easier, and how Holly learns from the residents who are struggling. Yet, the deeper she gets, the less chance there is of her revealing who she really is without ruining the relationship they're quickly developing.

The characters themselves didn’t make anything more dramatic than it had to be though, and that was really refreshing after reading Undeniable by Liz Bankes. As I said, I'm not a fan of deception dating books, and this one dragged the climax of discovery out a long time, which meant the resolution was a little too rushed, but, overall, I was pretty pleased with this quick and loveable romance. She loves living there, because it's the nicest place she's ever lived, the people are nice, and she can indulge her love of antiques (this place is fancy). Rachel thinks her boyfriend Jack is and, after delving into his past, discovers he may not be who he says he is.The line between trust and suspicion are blurred and Rachel starts accusing Ben of all sorts of things which causes them to break up. Crucially the author also manages to show sensitivity and the reader really does feel like they are a part of Rachel’s dilemma and can appreciate her evolving view of Jack. The Verdict: The book, overall, was fairly fluffy and I never fully shipped the romance, which would be required for this to become a 5-star read for me.

Lots of twists and turns, ups and downs, confusion where you think you are on level ground and have it sussed, only to have something come out of nowhere and for you to realise you've been blindsided. The secondary characters like Holly's best friend and Malik's grandfather added a lot of humour and entertainment whilst at the same time bringing both characters back to reality.

It’s hard thing to do but I have to say if you are ever in a situation like this make sure you are honest from the very beginning, relieves a lot of stress. Firstly the situation she was in - Malik thinking she was someone else - could've been solved as soon as that old woman (Henrietta) was gone. Jack has, without doubt, a very dark secret, one which, regardless of the fact that Rachel's having his baby, she may not be able to forgive or forget. The pair have to become reacquainted to some degree - thanks to how their relationship initially developed - and I would have loved for Hubbard to elaborate on how they could be healthy and move forward.

Although she gets herself into a complex situation by not being entirely factual, there is a sense that she is an honest and generally good person. It was a story about love, friendship, family, wrong and right, good and bad, respect, trust, compassion, understanding, self discovery, honesty, integrity and hope. Then, when she realizes that isn't true, she's afraid to tell him because he doesn't like it when people use him for his wealth and fame - which she isn't at all.Certainly not an ideal situation but after splitting from make-do boyfriend, Ben, losing her mother suddenly to cancer and then discovering that she wasn’t quite the woman the family always thought, things finally feel like they are looking up. I don't do well with the stress, and a romance based on a deception is a hard thing for me to roll with. There were times I felt like I was actually standing in Oban's harbour smelling the fish and chips and then standing in Newcastle's city centre looking at the Monument, so well had the author captured and portrayed these places I know so well. An e-galley was provided by Bloomsbury USA Childrens via NetGalley in exchange for review consideration.
