Don Julio Tequila was founded by Don Julio González, whose life was defined by the passion which inspired him to make the world's first luxury tequila. For example, we love spiking our horchata with Riazul Añejo because of its distinct funky notes of nuts, coffee and honey. Don Julio learned the meaning of responsibility at an early age by working at his uncle José's tequila distillery. Certainly, you can create a good Margarita using Don Julio Reposado, but I personally find it slightly expensive for cocktail mixing. Don Julio Gonzalez-Frausto Estrada was born on 7 January 1925 in Atotonilco, Jalisco, where today's main facility is located. Don Julio Tequila uses only the highest caliber, fully matured, and ripened Blue Agave cultivated within the Denomination of Origin and the majority coming from the rich, clay soils of the Los Altos region of the state of Jalisco. During its time in the barrel, the tequila darkens to a subtle gold hue as it pulls tannins from the wood to create the warm flavors of caramel and honey.
In 1985 Don Julio González-Frausto celebrated his 60th Birthday, his sons commemorated the date by creating a Tequila in his name, Don Julio. Aged one to three years, añejo tequila takes on even more character from the wood, proving that true distinction comes with age. Tequila's major aging process over time takes place in conjunction with the development of agave plants, given that they take seven years to reach maturity.At the core of the design is Tequila Don Julio’s adage that inspires you to follow your heart, because life is more fulfilling when you do it Por Amor. The expanded agave plantations were a joint venture between the Gonzalez-Frausto, Funtanet, Andrade Rivera Torres, and Cuaik families. The Don Julio Real is the pinnacle of luxury, having been aged for three to five years in American white oak barrels, making it an extra-añejo. If you’re considering straight shots, choose an extra smooth brand like Los Azulejos Silver (which layers on a smoky aroma) or Don Julio Blanco (full of citrusy grapefruit notes) for a complex taste without the harsh burn. In 1942, Don Julio González decided to establish his roots in Atotonilco El Alto, Mexico where he acquired his Distillery “La Primavera”.
