About this deal

However, the stylus will change shape more as it wears down compared to the ML/MR, which is bad for tracking, and especially tight inner groove tracing.

the 95ML does what a great micro-linear stylus should which is to limit much of the noise or, at the very least, bury it to the point that it is not distracting. Maybe once there are a few hundred hours on the SH it'll show it's tracking weakness and noise pickup in comparison to the ML. On the other hand if you have a warm sound overall and want a bit more sparkle up top then kicking things up a notch with the ML should be a good option. I never thought I would spend as much as I did on a stylus; however, it has made all the difference. There’s a lot of drive here, though the VM95 is not voiced such that standout bumps in frequency make it an unpleasant listen. And yes, the VM95ML has the equivalent of the 2M bronze stylus in their respective ranges (95E = 2M Red = bonded elliptical, 95EN = 2M Blue = nude elliptical, 95ML = 2M Bronze = microline/fine line, 95SH = 2M Black = Shibata). Repeating that same success will be no mean feat, and to attempt such is certainly a bold move on Audio-Technica’s part. Switching to the Elliptical stylus brings back the magic of the old AT95, though it’s much closer to the 95XE than the 95E. I wouldn't have used those descriptors w/r/t the ML before yesterday's very non-scientific shootout.

My SH arrived earlier this week and I'll hopefully get some time to listen to it properly this weekend. The bonded elliptical stylus of the 110 being replaced with the nude stylus of the 200 along with a boron canteliver and I have to say I'm delighted with the results. There is very much a tangible difference between the two respective sound profiles (how much of that can be due to the different headshealls? The design replicates the structure of the cutter head, precisely matching the positions of the left and right channels in the stereo groove resulting in extended frequency response, better stereo separation and exceptional tracking. Channel separation (at 1kHz) is 18dB for the VM95C, 20dB for the VM95E, 22dB for the VM95EN and 23dB for the VM95ML and VM95SH.

Also, apologies for the length; however, I know that for those new(ish) to vinyl (like me), it's the information below that is needed. My displays are helpful when I look at other's recorded music and I see the wave form "fill" my screen and often look like a flat top hair cut near or at 0db, compressed and limited probably to -0. I've had the Shibata on my tonearm for about 2 weeks now, which is used for a minimum of 1-2 hours everyday. From what I've seen from people's comparisons between the ML and the SH its pretty much down to personal preference and system sound.

I wasn’t prepared for the quality of sound that the VM95 generator can produce when paired with an advanced stylus, and it really does go to show how important that tiny spec of diamond is to the playback chain. Though it has to be said that the VM95 body is a step up, so to use the new styli on an older body may not realise the full performance. There are so many different opinions on what represents a respected LP that might make a 1970s Columbia US pressing a fit for this test.

E a modified AT95 stylus on a VM95 body) there would be no issues with a VM95 stylus on an AT95 body. Planning to get an ML stylus at some point as its a bit cheaper and it might be nice for extracting a bit more drive out of records that are somewhat constricted in dynamic range and sound compressed by default. They also found that a "less good" tracker like the Grado Gold 1, tapped out around 45um in one channel and 65um in the other.
