Fans of Aesop are ardent in their devotion with an allegiance that (at least for me) comes down to how the products make you feel. An alcohol-free toner that mostly consists of aloe vera leaf juice, sodium lactate, and witch hazel. A typical bottle of shower gel is made up of 99% water, whereas this ingenious powder-to-foam formulation, which delivers up 100 washes from each fully recyclable aluminium bottle, saves 5 litres of water and five plastic bottles from ending up in refill. Aesop was founded as a hair and body care range in 1987 by barber Dennis Paphitis in Melbourne, Australia, the result of some back room mixology involving essential oils and a mission to change things up.

From design to formulation, the B Corp certified brand has high standards when it comes to self-care, as well as caring for the planet. But we don’t love that the other beneficial ingredients — like green tea leaf extract, parsley seed oil, and panthenol (provitamin B5) — are used in very low concentrations (less than 1%). We love that the base of this Aesop serum is aloe vera juice, a super-hydrating and soothing ingredient. Leave on for half an hour and give your skin a drink of water, or leave on all night and wake up to fresher, totally hydrated skin. Part of the wider Baie 19 collection of body-care heroes (which includes fragrance, perfume oil, body lotion and body oil), it is paraben-free, vegan-friendly and builds to a rich and luxurious lather.

Free from parabens and mineral oils, the gel-based solution builds to a luxurious lather for skin that feels soft and hydrated. Overall, we don’t recommend Aesop skincare products since the brand places such an emphasis on fragrance in their products.
