About this deal

This was a tough one to choose as all four lenses do come with great build quality and all feel extraordinarily strong and sturdy. But I did find that out of all four lenses the Sigma just tipped the scales. The aesthetics of the Sigma and exceptional build from them make it the one I would recommend if you are wanting a nice looking and strong lens for your Sony Alpha. With the lens set to its maximum aperture of f/2.8, there is some light fall-off in the corners, requiring you to stop down by at least 3 f-stops to completely prevent it. The first in a new Zoom line-up, Samyang's AF 24-70mm F2.8 FE is the perfect all-in-one zoom to complement full-frame mirrorless cameras, delivering a wide angle of view and bright maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. Optimal resolution is achieved through an optical design of 17 elements in 14 groups, including 2 Aspherical, 1 Hybrid-Aspherical, 3 High Refractive and 3 Extra-Low Dispersion. In addition, UMC Ultra Multi-Coatings have been applied to minimise aberration and unnecessary light dispersion. Combined with Sony's full-frame image sensor, this zoom lens delivers superior sharpness and contrast in all areas of the image. First, there were the inexpensive manual focus lenses, then the excellent AF lenses and now Samyang spread its wings a little further with its first AF zoom lens. A new landmark whilst celebrating 50 years of Samyang lenses. The Samyang AF 24-70mm f/2.8 FE, for Sony FE full-frame and E crop sensor cameras (giving a "35mm equivalent" field of view of 36-105mm), offers weather sealing, constant aperture, a 9 bladed diaphragm for smooth bokeh and, very interestingly, a parfocal design. Most zoom lenses are varifocal in design, which means that lenses should be refocused after the zoom setting is changed. Parfocal lenses maintain their focus as they are zoomed, which has interesting implications for videography as well as stills photography. So now let's couple the new lens up with the 42MP Sony A7R III body and see if Samyang has hit the ground running as they enter the fiercely competitive world of the fast standard zoom. This lens does not feature optical image stabilisation, so it relies on the camera body's own built-in stabilisation, which is fine unless you're an owner of an early Sony Alpha camera.

moins bons en terme de : piqué , qualité de construction, ergonomie, poids et taille, AF, formes des ronds de bokeh Resistance to flare is correct for a 24-70 like the Sigma 24-70 F2.8 but less good than the Sigma 28-70

So, those are the specs of each lens side by side and as you can see few differences between them. But how does each lens weigh up against each other when being used in the same circumstances, or say for example on a day out at Boscastle Harbour in Cornwall. Well, I had the chance to test each lens recently in this very location and this is what I thought of each lens, along with examples taken with each lens on my Sony A7R IV. The lens is very heavy more than the Sigma and Sony equivalent , it is well built like the other Samyang but it a level below the Sigma Art and Sony GM. Starting with the native option from Sony. The G Master was what I would expect from a Sony lens and got the job done for my needs at the time. The autofocus functions worked the smoothest out of the 4 lenses which I put down to it being Sony's own native lens. This meant it worked great and was the most responsive. Optical construction is 17 elements in 14 groups, including 2 Aspheric, one Hybrid Aspheric, 3 HR (High Refractive index) and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion). The coating is Samyang's well established UMC. For improved bokeh, the diaphragm comprises 9 blades. The lens is also weather-sealed. This lens has a dust and moisture resistant design that is sealed in seven different places which makes it well-suited to life in both the field and the studio. In the past, Samyang lenses have been celebrated for their difference; for a long time being only fully manual primes, but very good ones optically and selling at very affordable prices. Now there’s a myriad of Chinese brands muscling in on that territory, some with even lower-priced products, which is probably why Samyang has decided to move itself much more into the mainstream, first with AF primes and now with its first AF zoom for mirrorless. This is bringing it directly up against heavy-hitters such as Sigma and Tamron, as well as the camera brands themselves, but the new AF 24-70mm f/2.8 FE suggests it’s everybody else who should be worried, not Samyang. With some of the best lenses on the market offering fixed F2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, it opens up the possibilities even further with good low light capabilities and lovely smooth bokeh or shallow depth of field.

Linear MF Focus Control: Provides convenience to video shooters by matching the torque of the focus ring as closely as possible to that of a manual focus lens when shooting video in manual mode. There is a very smooth electronic manual focus ring and this can be used in MF mode or in the DMF mode where MF can be used to actively over-ride AF. These functions are activated in the camera menus. Focusing is down to 0.24m, or 0.79 feet, a maximum magnification of 0.13x. Apart from the lens name engraved on the barrel, that is it. Small primes such as this could still benefit the user by having a distance and depth of field scale, enabling easy setting of hyperfocal distance, but sadly no room has been found to provide these. The upside is likely to be a more compact and more sophisticated optical construction is possible, along of course with AF. This is undoubtedly a premium lens in terms of its construction and finish, and the only bum note in an otherwise exceptional optical performance is the amount of barrel distortion at 24mm. It won’t be an issue with subjects such as landscapes, or even portraits, but you will notice it if there are any straight lines in a scene that are located close to the image edges. It’s unlikely to be a deal breaker given that the Samyang does everything else so well, and the price tag is very hard to go past. Bon résultats en portrait et photographie de rue : piqué, beau rendu des couleurs, très naturel, et flou d’arrière plan doux

The Samyang 24-70mm F2.8 (900 euros) is globally a very good lens at a reasonable price but the competition is very tough and offer excellent options that are all better in one or several areas compared to the Samyang 24-70 F2.8 Now you may be thinking, yes these all offer a zoom range of 24-70mm, apart from the Tamron with its unique 28-75mm, and yes, they all have a fixed fast aperture of F2.8 throughout the lens. But with all four being at such different prices for many of the same features what makes them unique from each other? To answer that let us have a look at the specs side by side: La résistance au flare est moyenne mais typique d’un 24-70mm , comme le Sigma 24-70 F2.8, mais moins bonne qu’un Sigma 28-70 F2.8 Looking to upgrade your equipment? The versatile Samyang AF 24-70mm F2.8 FE delivers high performance at an affordable price

si vous avez absolument besoin d’un 24mm et que le budget est important alors c’est une bonne option mais pour 33% plus cher on a le Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art qui est la référence des 24-70 The minimum focal distance is just 35cm, adding versatility and making it possible to produce a unique perspective close to the subject. The short focal distance also makes it easier to take portraits with exaggerated features, such as food on tables and interior shots in narrow spaces. The 24-70mm lens is a good place to start looking if you are wanting a full-frame lens that will be able to cover a diverse variety of photography types. From the widest part of the lens at 24mm for Landscapes to the narrowest part of 70mm for Portraits. And the in-between for almost all types of photography. The lens utilizes a Linear STM (Stepping Motor) for smooth auto-focusing, and it's very quiet in operation making it well-suited to shooting video. An interesting aspect of the optical design is that it’s parfocal, which means that the set focus doesn’t change during zooming. It’s achieved via a complex internal arrangement that moves the focusing group to compensate for the changes in image size happening with zoom, but maintains a manually- set focus point. It’s a feature for videographers – and usually only found on much pricier cinema lenses – and Samyang is very much targeting this lens at these users.
