At a physical level, ghosts can cause or take advantage of problems such as skin rashes or making babies cry all night, so that their parents suffer from sleeplessness. They take advantage of the resultant vulnerability to create an entry poi The 1987 movie examines demonic possession from an unusually scientific perspective, as a group of scientists and students study an ominous cylinder containing an unknown substance. It's revealed that it's an ancient text that describes the physical manifestation of the Devil himself. The movie cleverly meshes supernatural horror with science, and though it isn't exactly scientifically accurate, few demon-possession movies have ever approached the subgenre from a scientific standpoint.Interestingly, what may underlie this “ghost / demon” like experience may be in the amino acid metabolism (“oxidation of glycine, alanine and leucine” see referenc below) in the body during growth spurts (trauma and/or grief included– oxidative stress); the metabolized / oxidized amino acid turns into soot / carbon; that may form a ghost like ‘image’ in the brain; and then come out of the body- gravitate (be attracted) to carbon based Chrystal objects- such as a Chrystal glass– that then may shatter spontaneously in the cupboard. Exorcisms were also common. They can be reconstructed from both Medieval Jewish texts and texts from neighboring ancient cultures that practiced exorcisms. Exorcists acting almost like shamans would do rituals to exorcise one of a "demon" or evil spirit. According to Gina Konstantopoulos, a figure named an "Āshipu" acted as a exorcist in Mesopotamia and were trained in many fields of occultism, priesthood and herbalism. [92] As amulets (called teraphim) were also used in Yahwism to ward off evil spirits, it may also be reconstructed that there were people in Ancient Israel who acted as exorcists or shamans who would do specific rituals to ward off evil spirits. As mentioned previously, these may have included music, incense, prayers, and trance-rituals. According to Reimund Leicht, formulae was used ward off the evil, along with ritualistic sacrifices. Witchcraft, healing and vernacular magic in Italy. Manchester University Press. January 2020. ISBN 9781526137975. Thanks Douglas. I think there is much more at stake here than a ‘terminological preference’. Whether or not one thinks that schizophrenia is caused by demonic possession has implications for the way in which it is researched and treated, and attitudes towards the mentally ill. If I read you correctly, you also imply that it is important to take into account cultural factors when deciding how to understand and treat mental illness. I agree 100%. But such efforts should complement scientific methods, not replace them.

Hamori, Andras (2015). On the Art of Medieval Arabic Literature. USA: Princeton University Press. p.158. The belief in spirit possession is part of the native culture of the Sidama people of southwest Ethiopia. Anthropologists Irene and John Hamer postulated that it is a form of compensation for being deprived within Sidama society, although they do not draw from I.M. Lewis (see Cultural anthropology section under Scientific views). The majority of the possessed are women whose spirits demand luxury goods to alleviate their condition, but men can be possessed as well. Possessed individuals of both sexes can become healers due to their condition. Hamer and Hamer suggest that this is a form of compensation among deprived men in the deeply competitive society of the Sidama, for if a man cannot gain prestige as an orator, warrior, or farmer, he may still gain prestige as a spirit healer. Women are sometimes accused of faking possession, but men never are. [62] East Africa [ edit ] Most people may have kept a secret about that teenage- growth spurt related- soot like ghost experience- that rips out of the body and may be throws the body around, ‘pins’ to the wall, to the bed, to the floor, etc.; interestingly, the decision made (in retaliation to that “ghost” like experience) may determine the person’s career- the kind of work the person does in life.

In Mayotte, approximately 25% of the adult population, and five times as many women as men, enter trance states in which they are supposedly possessed by certain identifiable spirits who maintain stable and coherent identities from one possession to the next. ISBN 9789004269637. Some theologians, such as Ángel Manuel Rodríguez, say that mediums, like the ones mentioned in Leviticus 20:27, were possessed by demons. Another possible case of demonic possession in the Old Testament includes the false prophets that King Ahab relied upon before re-capturing Ramoth-Gilead in 1 Kings 22. They were described as being empowered by a deceiving spirit. [6] If there is no effect of exorcism, then it is bad for religious belief (or at least belief in exorcism). If there is a culture-specific effect of exorcism (contrasted with fake exorcism) then this suggests religious relativism. If exorcism using one belief system works even on non-believers but other belief systems doesn’t work it might at first seem we have some evidence for that belief system. Yet most faiths seem very unwilling to do this kind of comparision: perhaps because if one faith happens to be correct, then the majority of people – no matter how sincere – must be wrong about their faith.
