About this deal

Take your time pouring the water into your “snow” while you either use a spoon or your hands to mix the snow to your desired consistency. The area surrounding the experiment should be kept clear of any obstructions and away from the storage of food. It should be well lit and ventilated and close to a water supply. A solid table with a heat resistant top should be provided Please note: The jar in the video below has been replaced by a bag that contains the same amount of powder.

Put your box of baking soda in the freezer for a couple of hours, or the night before if you want it to feel cold like real snow. Honestly, all of these recipes on how to make instant snow at home are super easy to clean up after you and your kids are done playing, but I would have to say method 6 with the baking soda and conditioner gets the edge in this test.

Reagents

Sodium polyacrylate is a polymer. Its molecules are very long and consist of identical fragments. These fragments contain carboxyl groups that “adore” water – in other words, they are hydrophilic. This feature of polyacrylate is what guarantees the success of our experiment. How do we obtain snow in a beaker? The Insta Snow also includes an activity guide that explains the science behind the fake snow. And it’s easy to turn into snow – just add water and watch it erupt in seconds. Kids are always amazed at this!

Now it’s time to gather up your snowmaking materials and turn your kitchen into a winter wonderland filled with homemade snow! More Fun Science Experiments: Add 1 bag of cornstarch (ours was 454 grams/ 16 ounces) with 1 cup of conditioner. We used unscented but a lavender or light scented version would also work. If you want your snow to be really cold like real snow then keep it in the freezer a few hours before the experiment. If you are looking for warm and tropical feeling snow, then skip the freezer step. Cold Test: The salt and water instant snow method feels pretty cold in the cold test department! As long as you use very cold water, then the temperature of your snow should feel very realistic! Caution: Whether you decide to keep your diaper snow to reuse it or throw it away, do not put it down your sink! It can clog your drain!

More Fun Science Experiments for Kids:

Even though this method with baking soda and conditioner did not get quite as cold as method 2 with baking soda and water, I still think it wins as the overall best homemade snow and it is super easy to clean up! Have fun playing with all kinds of fake snow this Winter! Let us know which sensory activity your kids loved the best! For those of you who prefer more of a warm tropical snow (which doesn’t actually exist in the weather world) then you can skip the freezer and just cut right to the chase in making warm, fluffy, magical snow!
