About this deal

I used the LP-phone-amp-g103 to drive all of these headphones so there shouldn't be any issues with the amp. Now that I'm wearing these headphones for 6-8 hours a day I do begin to notice the weight but it is not neccesarely disturbing.

Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO review | MusicRadar

The second test was with a variety of genres, from Jazz to Ambient, Pop, 80's etc. Here's where "the fun" started. I tried a bunch of reference music for audiophiles out of curiosity (I'm not one of them!). With that being said, I love the by some considered sharp highs of the dt-990's, everything sounds crystal clear, not "muddy" or "washed out". I listen to a lot of vocals so that's a must for me. But as I said, it ain't for everybody since some might say the highs are over saturated, and they are, but it sounds nice. It's something I'm looking for in headphones, are you looking for that? If not steer away from these headphones. Cons: they might be too sharp for some and too tiring if used in long sessions. Other cons are the fact that you can really hear if a song is mixed/mastered like shit, you can hear everything. I'm not gonna say sh*t like :"you suddenly hear instruments that you previously didn't hear" if you suddenly heard an instrument that you didn't hear before on decent headphones that's on you. But you definitely hear if someone didn't bother cleaning up the samples he used in his song, and you might need different headphones or speakers to enioy songs that are badly mixed. And well they do. I use them daily for the computer usage I described earlier. For a while I took them to school which they handled perfectly. They're sturdy with a metal frame but just light enough that long time wearing is still comfortable. DT990 Pro are definitely better with non-electronic dance music genres if someone wants to buy these headphones for casual listening. DT990 Pro revealed its full glory in this test. Horizontal and vertical space became filled with the joy of good sound. Of course, high frequencies are in front too. DT990 has simply too much of it. But at least it didn't hurt my ears. While the 990's are really similar, they are tighter on the ears, and I don't like that at all, but they are still quite comfortable. Both the DT 990 PRO 80 Ohms and 250 Ohms have the same durable build qualityas they are almost entirely made from high-grade and durable plastic, except for their steel metal headband that suspends the ear cups, providing a secure fit. The ear cups are adjustable, replaceable, and consist of soft memory foam padding wrapped in velour for optimum comfort when playing games or listening to music for extended periods. In addition, they come with a straight tangle-free cord attached to one side for efficient frequent adjustment. Performance/sound quality:

The spring steel headband means the ear cups can stretch out almost horizontal, too, so you will be hard-pushed to find a head size it doesn’t accommodate. The hd-650 sounded like the 990's if someone put an equalizer on them that turned down every frequency past 3khz down 3-6db. My other impression was that I don't hear any more stereo space in these headphones than in DT770, which is ridiculous as 770 are closed and 990 are open. I should be able to hear a huge difference. I've had quite a few headphones over the years for computer usage (Netflix, Youtube and gaming and of course since this year Zoom calls). When my last pair broke because of poor building quality I just decided I needed a more decent pair. Also I wanted to use them for more quiet bass sessions. I never had a pair that could actually handle the sound of my bass well. So I figured, Studio headphones should do.

I am always hopeful that I can fix headphones with EQ but my first two tries last night were met with failure. This headphone's main saving grace is its rather good spatial qualities. Alas, fixing the high frequency peaks and levels by eye killed that aspect and still left the nastiness that was in there at times. Any attempt to boost the bass frequencies resulted in nasty bass distortion and worse warbling sound per above.

Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO review - SoundGuys

My first impression when I played some music was like: "My ears! It hurts!" because of the amount of high-frequency content. This was the reason to do the first test with high-frequency rich genres like Trance and Techno. I wouldn't recommend DT990 Pro for casual listening. Most of your favourite songs may be unbearable to listen to. Besides that, as long as you can still hear a high frequency range up to 16kHz as I do, this part of the spectrum will be always taking the space and in front position.

Soft ear pads and adjustable, sliding, earpieces together with a very flexible coiled cable ensure listening comfort during extended periods of use.

Some people may enjoy genres like Jazz, RnB etc. on those because of the wide stereo space. As long as it doesn't have exaggerated cymbals, you may be fine. If you prefer deeper, more towards mid and bass range sound, avoid DT990 at all costs. The DT 990 PRO is an open dynamic headphone of exceptional quality suitable for the most demanding professional and audiophile applications. The reduced weight of the diaphragm and moving coil result in a similar pulse characteristic as electrostatic headphones, and in combination with a carefully tailored frequency response offer a natural and balanced sound. I must say, I was surprised how this finally salvaged the headphone sound. I am listening to it as I type this and it almost sounds "normal" in a good way! Mind you, if you turn up the level too much, the warbling sound comes to haunt you but that is likely not your everyday level. After comparing these two headphones side by side, we found that the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 250 Ohmsis a better choice than the DT 990 PRO 80 Ohms due to its superior sound quality.I am not going to recommend the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro. It is just too broken. Even though EQ helped a lot, it is still an inefficient headphone with high distortion. If you have one, use my EQ and comment on how you like it. Otherwise it is a pass with or without EQ. Let's hope we can find a headphone as comfortable as this but with much better engineering. If I do really need a headphone amp, any recommendations? (I use the headphones for mixing, I'm pairing it with Sonarworks SoundID) However, if you regularly have lengthy listening sessions to your music, you will appreciate the work Beyerdynamic has put into their build: (replaceable) grey velour ear pads epitomise comfort, fitting snugly around your ears, while gently clasping your head with the right amount of snugness. And the hd-650? They clamp like crazy, I couldn't wear these for over 10 minutes, really uncomfortable. Despite having the same frequency response range of 5Hz-35 kHz, these headphones have a great sound delivery with an excellent sense of imaging, depth, and soundstage. As a result, they are perfect for any gaming session and studio mixing, monitoring, and mastering.
