About this deal

Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball was Waterstones Book of the Month in October 2017. Amelia Fang would rather hang out with her pet pumpkin Squashy and her friends Florence the yeti (DON’T CALL HER BEAST!) and Grimaldi the reaper than dance at her parents’ annual Barbaric Ball. When the King’s spoiled son Tangine captures Squashy, Amelia and her friends must escape the party to plan a daring rescue! But they begin to realise things in Nocturnia may not be quite what they seem. Welcome to the world of Nocturnia, where darkness reigns supreme, glitter is terrifying, and unicorns are the stuff of nightmares! Amelia Fang would much rather hang out with her pet pumpkin Squashy and her friends Florence the yeti (DON'T CALL HER BEAST!) and Grimaldi the reaper than dance at her parents' annual Barbaric Ball. Anderson has illustrated works for a number of authors, including Cerrie Burnell and Sibéal Pounder. In the mid-2010s she was chosen to illustrate the new covers for the relaunches of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five series and of Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series. Anderson’s first fiction series as both author and illustrator was the Amelia Fang series. The series revolves around a young vampire named Amelia and her family and friends, which include a yeti, a pet pumpkin, and a young grim reaper. Books in the series included Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball (2017), Amelia Fang and the Memory Thief (2018), and Amelia Fang and the Lost Yeti Treasures (2019). The award-winning series has been translated into more than 20 languages. Here’s a fab pic of Laura Ellen Anderson, the author and illustrator of the series, dressed-up as Amelia when we filmed her reading from her first book Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Balllast year in a creepy graveyard.Amelia and friends live in the spooky land of Nocturnia, which means that you can take the Halloween costume box down from the attic 6 months’ early! But with unicorns, fairies and angel-kittens lurking around every corner, who can they trust? And will they finally uncover the real villain keeping the kingdoms of Light and Dark as mortal enemies? And when the King’s spoiled son Tangine captures Squashy, Amelia and her friends must escape the party to plan a daring rescue! In their race against time, they begin to realise things in Nocturnia may not be quite what they seem . . . Another vampire myth I’ve distorted is the idea that they can’t be exposed to sunlight – NOT in my book! In the Kingdom of the Dark the creatures, including vampires, just don’t like the sunlight because they’re usually asleep during the daytime. They’re a bit scared of it; like you or I may be a bit scared of the dark. (Actually, I really AM scared of the dark!) Amelia lives with her parents Count Drake and Countess Frivoleeta, and her pet pumpkin Squashy, in Nocturnia - a city in the Kingdom of the Dark, where glitter is terrifying and unicorns and sparkly fairies are the stuff of day-mares. One of the things I’ve loved most about writing Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball has been creating the world that Amelia and her friends live in. It’s such fun to let my imagination run wild and to create a gothic setting for their adventures. But that's not all! The bravest little vampire in the kingdom embarks on a BRAND NEW ADVENTURE discovering new worlds and new characters in the FOURTH book of the series...

She can slip through the green door with the mouldy handle, and voila! She’s at the river! I wish I knew of a few real shortcut-doors in my life… A door that could lead me straight to my favourite coffee shop would be grand. But not long after arriving, the precious glittery treasures of the ancient yetis start to go missing. And when Tangine goes missing too he becomes the prime suspect! Not only that but the tunnels of Yeti Mountain have started to collapse on themselves and it looks like Florence and her family will have to move far away. It's looking like the gang might never see each other again! Author and illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson gives us a glimpse into the wonderful world of Amelia Fang, her latest literary creation. Where have everyone’s memories gone? And how can Amelia save them when they have all forgotten who she is?
