The popular children’s book by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is brought to life in this imaginative learning resource. [5] According to CCSU, some runners up through 2002 were Commended (from 1959) or Highly Commended (from 1974). There were 99 commendations of both kinds in 44 years including six in 1986. I loved the myriad ways in which the author pays homage to different fairy tales, although many of the humorous references may go over a young child's head. [5] Summary [ edit ] I personally think this would be a great book to use in a KS1 for a literacy lesson. It provides great opportunities to aid modelling different styles of writing e.g letters, postcards, rhyming, description and re telling fairytales. It can be used to define children's understanding of some well-known fairytales and maybe lead onto dictation or conversational talk. Discover the magic of letters with this much-loved rhyming tale, which has delighted readers for generations. Teaching wise I feel that this book has a lot to offer, this book could be used in a letter writing unit of literacy work, I feel this book could also be used in a unit of work about careers and jobs, with the obvious use of a postman. I also feel it could be stretched further and used in a unit of work about community, including work about our neighbours and/or manners, due to the contrast between the bears and the witch in the story for example. One of the characters from the book would like to start a town newspaper.
