There is information available on all the ranges and mediums along with basic information and instructions for use. Apply 2 generous coats of our white acrylic eggshell base layer on the inside, outside and base of your creation. Allow this to dry for a couple of hours. On the other hand, gloss varnish has a shiny, reflective finish that can make colors appear more vibrant and add depth to your piece. It can also help protect your artwork from UV damage and other environmental factors. Encaustic paintings typically do not require varnish due to the natural protection provided by the wax medium. What if I want to mix my own colours? The whole range is fully interchangeable. Any of the washes, detailing paints, mediums and pure paints can be mixed with each other.

Matte varnish provides a subtle, non-reflective finish that works well for a natural look or pieces with lots of texture, while gloss varnish offers a shiny, reflective finish that can enhance colors and provide more durability. I personally prefer matte or semi. I never go for gloss. It’s my personal taste. These paints are bottled in 10ml bottles with tamper proof lids. They have a ‘dropper stopper’ that allows you to add drops of paint to your palette to avoid waste. You can remove this stopper and use straight from the bottle if preferred. They are designed to be used with a brush and again consist of a mixture of pigments and mediums for direct application to the vinyl but can also be mixed with any of the products from the range. TLDR: The choice between matte and gloss varnish depends on personal preference and the desired effect for your artwork. Matte varnish provides a natural, non-reflective finish suitable for textured pieces which is great for when photographing artworks, while gloss varnish offers a shiny, reflective finish that enhances colors and durability. Consider factors like display location, lighting, texture, and the medium used when choosing between the two types of varnish. Matte Varnish After over a year of research, investigation, experimentation and recently trial runs – I am finally happy with the range we developed and are thrilled to be able to share them with you JMatte varnish has a flat, non-reflective finish that can give your artwork a more subdued and natural look. It can be particularly effective for pieces that have a lot of texture or detail, as it won’t detract from the intricacies of the work.

Texture: Matte varnish can enhance the texture of a painting, while gloss varnish can make it appear smoother.

If there’s one major disadvantage to varnish, it’s that it doesn’t offer the level of protection that other types of coatings like UV coating or aqueous coating (AQ) do. Matte varnish is also less likely to show fingerprints or smudges, making it a good choice for pieces that will be displayed without glass or in areas with high humidity. What if I want to vary my skin tones? Not a problem. You can vary the amounts of each layer you apply to achieve different looks i.e. more layers of pigment for darker/jaundiced look; more blues and darker reds for newborn and mottled looks.
