With proper maintenance, I’ve had mine live for about 2.5 years, which is quite alright for a filter of this price. The SunSun / Polar Aurora canister filters come from China and are fairly cheap for the filtration power they provide.

Vertical Pre-FilterFluval is the only brand to offer a vertical pre-filter orientation, which provides more surface area and better mechanical filtration I did not include internal filters in this list as I don’t think they provide a decent filtration in larger aquariums and they don’t look good (actually what you said, haha). A HOB filter’s motor will run very quiet indeed. However, the way they return water to your fish tank can be noisy.
