About this deal

What was the point of the investigation? The family history was so all over the place and by the end of the book the whole thing seemed like a waste of time.

I have nearly all Lynda’s books they just get better and better the dark room is one of the best Reply Helena Lanark is an elderly woman, living in a luxurious care home. The heiress of an immense family fortune, she keeps the secret to the horror which once occurred within the Lanark family house.I have mixed thoughts on this book. I didn’t dislike it but I definitely didn’t enjoy it. The suspect plot line felt so all over the place and the romance subplot was questionable at best. Personally, i felt there was a lot of useless information about the house renovation, I get having sub plots but man, that was boring. All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate.

I think Lynda la Plante is much better on tv than in print! What a poorly written book; I’ve never thought the word bland would describe a novel but somehow it does for this effort. DI Jane Tennison is part of the team investigating the crime. On visiting the crime scene, Jane discovers the house has more horrors to reveal - in the form of a mummified baby who was buried alive.

Speaking of, since when is it ok to discuss the minutiae of your case with non police, Jane? Extremely unprofessional, and for an obnoxious, overbearing, pompous character like our “heroine”, I would have expected professionalism. How is a main character so awful?? Genuine question because I as the reader should surely be on her side? But she is impatient, irritable, downright rude a lot of the time, pompous, judgemental, and snobby. I don’t think I’ve ever read a character I disliked as much. None of it made sense, there were too many characters that appeared out of the blue and then seemingly never existed (where did tim go?) and by the end i’d practically forgotten what had happened at the beginning for them to even end up there. I also doubt this book was ever proof read considering the amount of mistakes i noticed while reading! But, when he finally gets what he’s yearned for all these years, a political scandal erupts around him and he is shunned into the shadows once again with no shred of a positive reputation left. Sir William Benedict is left with no choice but to exact revenge on those who have sabotaged his dreams…and Justin Chalmers and his sister Laura are about to discover just how dark revenge can be when exacted by a man who has nothing left. What Kind of Awards has La Plante Earned? I have lived in China for the past 2O years,so getting English novels is not easy, although found odd ones on the internet here. So,my sister posts some to me,probably buys in Waterstones. Last year she sent a couple of your books, this year a couple more, including WIDOWS REVENGE,but this is the second one in the series,so cannot read it yet I am now hooked on them, have you any idea where they are available here. I am a 77 year old avid reader with a Chinese wife.I am preparing a new list to send to her, but if you have any idea where they may be available in China, would be great. I live in Suzhou City, about 60 miles inland from Shanghai. Reply

Relentless in her pursuit of the truth, Jane finds herself ostracised, but remains determined to solve the mystery of the baby’s death. Read all your books! Fantastic! Definitely my favourite author by far. Just finished Unholy Murder which was brilliant. Can’t wait to start Judas Horse now. Reply What I liked was a different style of telling the story, I'm a bit tired of all the same contemporary unreliable narrators in every mystery novel these days, so, a solid person was so refreshing. As the investigation and search for answers intensifies, Jane travels to Australia. There she discovers the dark secret that the Lanark family has kept hidden for decades. A secret that not only threatens to bring down a family dynasty, but also places Jane Tennison in mortal danger . . . The subplot had me wondering too. Why the detailed details? What was a long read made worse by minuscule minutia of renovating.

I've read all the books in this series so far and really enjoyed them but there is something about this particular book that is just 'off' for want of a better word.
