About this deal

I should note immediately that I rarely listen to the K612 because of this. It’s just a bit too flat and dull for my tastes, but others would disagree. But be warned, this is not an easy headphone you can drive without an amp, you must use a decent amp/dac to get he most out of this, I found 612pro is harder to drive than DT150, dt770.880.990 (250ohm variants) and many others, so be prepare to spend some money if you already don't have a decent amp, it can be a worthwhile investment in long run. Below the frequency response of the K612 with 3 mm felt in front of the driver. The treble spikes are lowered considerably. The shape of your head, bone structure, pad size, pad ‘softness, (compliance), hair or no hair and or wearing glasses may (drastically) change the frequency response of some headphones, so… your personal experience may differ substantially from these plots. The K712’s mid-range sounds very good, but the gradual drop-off after 1kHz can be bothersome at times.

Aside from a small correction of the microphone itself also some correction in the lowest frequencies is applied to the plots to compensate for the perceived loss of bass when using headphones. This is described HERE in more detail. As a big fan of the AKG K701, I was hoping for the best with the K-612, but concerned that they might be a disappointment. I needn't have worried - if anything, they sound a little better than the K-701. None of these headphones should really be pushed too hard, as they’ll kind of have a tough time keeping up.

DON’T OVERTHINK IT!! The plot below (right channel only) shows how the sound changes when it is fed from a 0 Ω amplifier and a 120 Ω output R amplifier. It also may just be my imagination, but I feel like the K612 is just a smidgen smaller in stature than the rest. Do note that the original made-in-Austria variants had 7 or so bumps across the bottom of the headband, an issue rectified in the Chinese models.

If you are used to heavy boomy, untextured bass presentations, 612pro will surely show you what you have been missing all these years, finally you can reinvent yourself as a real basshead who admires deep textured bass presentations. 612pro is surely is a fantastic option for vocals too. Vocals sounds very natural due to excellent neutrality of the mids, instrument timbre is very lifelike, very transparent, vocals can be upfront and can be very intimate sometimes. To me, this is a true all-rounder which can perform well in almost all the genres. The HD 600 still has the incredible ability to resolve details and present them in a more natural way. It's hard to explain but all the little nuances in vocals and stringed instruments are brought out a bit more. You hear them on the K612 too though, just not quite as clearly. It's something you wouldn't miss that you could only tell by a direct side by side comparison. This slight improvement will be enough to justify the upgrade for some. All things considered the K612 is still among the best sounding headphones in its class. Amplification: This headphone must be amped and have good synergy for it to reach it's full potential. If it's underamped it may clip a bit in the sound and sounds lifeless, dull, and flat sounding. People buying this headphone need to go in knowing it needs to be amped. It seems to respond the best to warmer sounding systems. The only thing about them is I would love if the cable was a bit longer, but it's a very minor complaint one of a more personal preference.

AKG K612 Pro Open Back Reference Headphones

I'm using my AKG K612 PRO headphone with my Fiio X3 2nd Gen dedicated DAP. Currently I don't own any headphone amp but planning to buy an A5. I'm gonna update this review when I do. Thanks again for your detailed and insightful inbox reply (I wasn't sure if you were still following this >1.5 yr old thread). Maybe the weirdness at 600Hz in the HE4XX frequency response doesn't help either, I think that is quite difficult to correct for in EQ's (and isn't present in Oratory's measurement to the same degree) - it's a strange shape, it might be somekind of cancellation that doesn't respond to EQ, just an additional thought. The K702 also has a tad more extension than the 701, but it’s very, very close. Again, DON’T OVERTHINK IT!I recently return my Fidelio x1 because weren't enough prominent the vocals, I wanted a sound more neutral, natural, detail and acurate Secondly, the feel and comfort of them are phenomenal. I can wear them for 3+ hours and they are still as comfortable when I first put them on. The K 712 review out at Headfonics and received lots of praise. Looks like the new K series is not just (as some claim) some sort of re-branding of previous versions. A comparion of the K612 and K712 would be interesting indeed. OK. I bought the K612 in part because of this recommendation and discussion. Thank you for the time you put into your review. I'll let you know if I concur. For reference, they will be my first mid-fi/hi-fi headphones, so it’s really tough to say anything else about my preferences etc.
