Look. Was I really not gonna like this book? No. It’s 100% my shit, everything I wanted, it’s gay, it’s beautiful, it’s heartbreaking. A real leveling up from priory (which I also enjoyed) and everything I’ve been craving in fantasy. Not just the beautiful sapphic relationships, but also the grandmothers, the mothers, the sisters, adopted or birth, they were an absolutely stunning representation of how women can protect and help each other. Wulf is our point of view in the North. He's such an engaging character, an intriguing man trying to escape the mysteries of his past. He serves as a warrior under King Bardholt, fighting against the rumours of the Haithwood, trying to be someone his family will be proud of. Wulf is also an incredibly loyal character, much like Tunuva, a fierce defender of those he loves, and a caring friend.

Samantha Shannon’s writing, as always, is incredible! The way she describes the world—I was completely immersed! Additionally, the pacing and prose are not as strong in Fallen Night as they are in The Priory. While the first book reads like a literary masterpiece, the prequel reads more like a traditional fantasy novel, with random bouts of literary prose. While this does make it technically easier to read, I missed the challenge on my reading comprehension that came with the first. The pacing also seemed scattered - my number one complaint (with all authors who use multiple POVs) is, is it *really* that hard to just include a timeline at the beginning of the chapter? Even within chapters, time jumps ranged from a few hours to a few months, with few context clues to realize any time had even passed at all from paragraph to paragraph. A Day of Fallen Night continues Priory’s themes of religion and the role of religion in defining history. If anything, Shannon uses this story to develop those themes even further, exploring the ways that religion influences the lives of every character in her world. Her characters all embody faith in different ways. Glorian Berethnet, the sole heir to her throne and the fifteen-year-old figurehead of her religion; Tunuva Melim, who has dedicated fifty years of her life to the Priory and to her goddess; and Dumai of Ipyeda, whose journey and relationship with the slumbering gods of the East will go on to define history.

Shannon introduces us to an entirely new cast of characters in A Day of Fallen Night, which takes place about 500 years before the events of Priory. As in Priory, Shannon excels at creating a strong cast of female characters with excellent queer representation. As I'm less active on social media than I used to be, I just thought I'd answer a few questions in advance, to give you a clearer sense of A Day of Fallen Night. A Day of Fallen Night is a standalone prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree. It’s set just shy of five centuries before Priory and covers the period known as the Great Sorrow, or Grief of Ages.

The world building is even richer and more fleshed out and you spend more time really digging into details and getting a look at the world of Priory as it was 500 years before. There are differences in cultures and beliefs and alliances that will provide fans of Priory a good amount of time to speculate how and when certain changes occur. His childhood friendship with Glorian slowly became one of my favourites. Although I cannot say too much about the plot of Wulf's story, know that it is enrapturing, never ceasing to elude and devour you.

Let's talk themes. Perhaps one of the biggest is how we all deal with being helpless and what choices we make when under that kind of pressure. The dragons in this universe and especially in this book are more like stand-ins for natural disasters. We frail humans cannot generally stand in the path of an earthquake or a volcanic eruption and expect to emerge the victor, and it is the same with the wyrms or western dragons, and to a lesser extent the hybrid creatures who follow them. The point here is that if you cannot solve the problem by swinging an ordinary sword at it, what choices do you make? This plays nicely into an examination of the interconnectedness of all things. When a global disaster hits, you may be striving to survive and find solutions, but so are other people on the other side of the world - people you have never met and will likely never know about. You benefit from their courage and endeavour as they benefit from yours. Therefore no matter how hopeless a situation appears, it is always worth fighting on in whatever way you can. No man is an island and perhaps you won't succeed for yourself but you might just tip the balance for someone else. The engrossing new story promises to deliver more character-driven, emotionally complex adventure and intrigue Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation is starting to question the Priory's purpose. A desirable and engrossing fantasy that is intense, dangerous, fascinating but compelling and also extraordinary.

In A Day of Fallen Night, Shannon avoids this problem by introducing Wulf, a young man from the North who becomes the fourth main protagonist in the second part of the book. Wulf strives to find his calling in a world that underestimates him, proving to be a multidimensional character every bit as compelling as the three female leads.
