About this deal

Just as a matter of interest, DIN stands for Deutsche Industrie Norm and, originating in Germany, is any of a series of technical standards, used internationally, to designate electrical connections, film speeds and paper sizes. What are the Different Types of Consumer Unit? An 'RCD Incomer' consumer unit is a special type of protection device, generally used in workshops, garages, garden offices, and sheds that use small numbers of circuits. Once the safety side of the board is in place, the next items to be installed are the MCB’s, one for each required circuit. As they are very sensitive to the slightest bit of earth leakage, it is not practical to fit one RCD to protect the whole house, hence the reason they are split over 2 circuits, normally one upstairs and one for downstairs.

An AFDD is activated by both series and parallel arc faults. Unlike circuit breakers or RCDs, an AFDD does not have an electromechanical trigger, but utilises electronic technology to analyse the signature (waveform) of an arc. Compliance with Regulations: Ensure that the consumer unit and its components comply with all relevant aspects of BS 7671 and any additional local regulations or standards. Surge Protection: In certain installations, particularly where there is a risk of lightning strikes or power surges, surge protection devices may be required. The breaker panel is the part of a consumer unit that contains the circuit breakers. It isn’t possible to replace a fuse box with just a breaker panel (you need the entire unit) so the cost to replace a fuse box with a breaker panel is similar to replacing one with a consumer unit. Cost of replacing fuse box with circuit breaker The RCD is then clipped onto the DIN bar. The top clip is first clipped over the top of the bar and then bottom either clips over using a spring clip, a screw or simply just clips over.Cable Entry and Exit: The consumer unit should have suitable cable entry and exit points with proper cable gland or entry system to maintain the ingress protection rating and prevent damage to cables. To do away with any potential issues such as these, the older fuse wires have been replaced by their modern equivalent, the MCB or miniature circuit breaker.

A special device that combines the functionality of both RCD and MCB, protecting against both overload and earth leakage. This offers complete circuit separationnegating nuisance tripping. Despite the limitations of dual RCD consumer units, they remain extremely popular due to the cost. Indeed, most 'fully loaded' consumer units are dual RCD configurations.

Difference between fuse box and consumer unit

Most modern fuse boxes contain circuit breakers. It is possible to replace an old-style fuse box with a newer, safer version. Compliant with latest safety standards: Hager consumer units are designed to meet the latest electrical safety standards, such as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Flush consumer units are one which is recessed into the wall. All four main consumer unit types are available in flush versions. They are functionally the same as a standard amendment 3 enclosure but are aesthetically better with a very slim profile.
