First and foremost, however, is the casting. Ewan McGregor, who played Alex in Shallow Grave, is earmarked for the Renton role from the start, and is first onboard. Elsewhere, there is careful discussion with casting directors Gail Stevens and Andy Pryor, although this proves to be relatively uncomplicated.Renton finds his sex drive has returned and goes to a club with his friends, where he meets a young woman called Diane. They leave together, go to Diane’s apartment, and have sex. Renton stays the night on a couch, and is horrified the following morning when he discovers that Diane is actually a fifteen-year-old high school student. He tries to put the incident behind him but Diane has a different idea—she threatens to tell the police that they had sex if he does not stay in touch with her. Meanwhile, Tommy and Spud also have a terrible night: Tommy’s girlfriend freaks out when she finds out that he lost their porno and Spud gets too drunk, passes out, and defecates in Gail’s bed. Trainspotting was released to critical acclaim, and is regarded by many critics as one of the best films of the 1990s. [6] [7] [8] The film was ranked tenth by the British Film Institute (BFI) in its list of Top 100 British films of the 20th century. In 2004, the film was voted the best Scottish film of all time in a general public poll. [9] A 2017 poll, which consisted of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics for Time Out magazine, ranked it the tenth best British film ever. [10] A sequel, T2 Trainspotting, was released in January 2017. Michael Howie; Kevin Schofield (7 April 2007). "Junkies reunited as sequel gets go-ahead". Edinburgh: News.scotsman.com. The Academy Award-nominated screenplay by John Hodge follows a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh and their passage through life. Beyond drug addiction, other themes in the film include an exploration of the urban poverty and squalor in Edinburgh. [5] Seasonal ennui puts a spanner in the works. "Ideally, you need four or five months to market a film," laments Short, "and effectively you lose December because everybody's going to Christmas parties, so you have a shorter lead time than you would normally. That's why we've been working so far in advance." January 1995

While PolyGram is concentrating on global domination as far as world distribution is concerned, one territory that has escaped their grasp is the US, where the film will be released in July 1996 through Miramax. The trio's pilgrimage to America to show the film to the powers that be there has been a big success. "I think they were really surprised by it," reflects MacDonald. "They bought it before they'd seen it, thinking they couldn't lose and even if they did, it would still be worth it for the relationship they could have with us - and get us to do an Elmore Leonard novel or whatever it is they want us to do there. But when they saw it they realised it could really be something.” December 1995 Catterall, Ali; Wells, Simon (2002). "Your Face Here: British Cult Movies Since the Sixties". Fourth Estate. p.233.

There are two scenes in Trainspotting which perfectly capture Boyle's trademark approach to this like no other. The first is the scene where Renton (a career-making performance by Ewan McGregor) dives into the disgusting toilet bowl to retrieve his suppositories. The character's joy and sense of wonder from the colourful fantasy is bookended by a grim and grotesque real-life setting, which is so upfront with its awfulness that we find ourselves retching with Renton in the cubicle. It's like watching Christiane F. (an equally brilliant film about heroin) being intercut with scenes from Yellow Submarine.

In September 2015, Boyle stated his next film would be a sequel, tentatively titled Trainspotting 2. [10] Later that month Boyle revealed that a script for the sequel had been written, and that filming would take place between May and June 2016. He hoped to release the film by the end of that year to commemorate Trainspotting 's 20th anniversary. [11] Shallow Grave is released on January 6 to the predicted ecstatic response, and goes on to break house records at five London cinemas in its opening weekend, including the MGM Haymarket and Gate Cinema in Notting Hill. Hodge completes his first draft, and moves on to further drafts, adding "progressively fewer changes each time." The battle for the rights proves to be ongoing… February 1995 A shortlist of a dozen read a scene, before the part eventually goes to Kelly MacDonald (no relation). "I knew straight away before she even sat down and opened her mouth that she was the one," says Boyle. "There were a couple of other possibles, but you could just tell. And if you get that instinct, you know you're right.“ June 1995Kit, Borys (4 December 2015). " 'Trainspotting 2,' With Original Cast, Lands at TriStar (Exclusive)". The Hollywood Reporter. Whether or not you wish to see more of certain characters, Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Renton/Mark and Jonny Lee Miller's portrayal of Simon. These two are reunited and become the central focus of the film, allowing other plot details to blossoms throughout. T2 Trainspotting is a far superior film in terms of displaying what the world is like and how technology is consuming us on a daily basis, which is not something that the first film could benefit from, so that was an improvement in my opinion. Where the film didn't quite live up to its predecessor, was in the simplistic story area. The original was all about drug use and the falling out of friendships by the end of the film. This film tries to wrap up too many loose ends, ultimately becoming slightly convoluted, albeit very effective at the same time. Despite all of this - T2 is a good film. It's not a great film, but it certainly isn't awful either. Its' greatest failing is that it can't decide whether to create an entirely new story - which would abandon the roots of the original - or to re-hash Trainspotting - which would be total cowardice. The film does the worst of both worlds, in that it doesn't have a great deal of original thought but it also doesn't capture what the first film did. Summerlad, Joe (22 June 2018).
