The Snow Girl by Sophie Anderson, Melissa Castrillon

This intriguing novel weaves together the stories of three seemingly disparate characters to create a rich tapestry of mystery, myth and adventure.Extremely unusual and beautifully written, this is a compelling and moving read. quiet. understated. humble. and oh, so lovely. this tender retelling of ‘the snow maiden’ really shines in its simplicity. I am sorry to say no matter which version, the story ends badly. The little snow girl comes and goes with winter, but in the end she always melts." pg 96, ebook.THE SNOW CHILD captured our imagination as the characters captured our hearts. Leaving us questioning the mysteries surrounding this so real story that had us hovering between reality and fantasy. Asking ourselves if Faina was actually a real girl or a fantasy? Was she a product of their imagination because of their desire for a child of their own? Or was she something magical? This added some suspense to the story as we tried to figure out who this little girl was. Beautifully written, this is an enchanting story about facing fears, reaching out to make new friends and knowing when to let go. The novel is interwoven with folk tales of snow spirts and enhanced by magical illustrations in wintry blue tones. In many ways, this debut work to me feels like an early draft of what would later become The Bright Edge of the World. The storylines are very similar: a childless couple dealing with the unforgiving and beautiful environs of Alaska, letter writing as an important vehicle for plot, and an encounter with a fledgling child of mystical origins.

Eowyn Ivey writes so vividly that I felt I was in the middle of the snow and then a full blown snow storm, and during the summer scenes, I felt the heat of the hot sun, the mosquitoes swarming. This story is such a beautiful example of magical realism, the fantastical, the imagined, combined and layered into the every day real life. And such a life that this couple experienced in the Alaskan wilderness where nothing is taken for granted, where preparing for the upcoming winter is paramount all spring and all summer. I recommend this story to anyone that values the beauty and selflessness of true friendship, who has ever dealt with love and loss in their life, or to those who are parents, as this book speaks to the nature of giving, caring, nurturing, but eventually, having to let go...

until one night, when an unexpected levity descends upon them, and they build a snow child together, dressing her in a hat and mittens that they have, and carving the face of a beautiful girl upon her. In my old age, I see that life itself is often more fantastic and terrible than the stories we believed as children, and that perhaps there is no harm in finding magic among the trees." pg 189, ebook.

In addition, the author is very happy because The Snow Girl is not the only adaptation of his novels. Also, in this case, through Globomedia and DeAPlaneta, they are working on a series that will encompass the author's first two novels: "The day that madness was lost" and "The day that love was lost." Nothing is known about them so far, but surely news about them will soon arrive. So this story was beautiful with so many cute and heartbreaking moments. One of the best things in the book is the character development and the developing relationships throughout the story. From the start of the book, I nearly started crying because there was just scenes that were so heart wrenching especially at the end which completely broke my heart. This is not an uncommon beginning to folk tales, a simple introductory line which can (and in Eowyn Ivey's The Snow Child does) condense into a few simple words the years of pain, sadness, and intense longing for something that nature refused to give despite desperate desire. "Where else in life, Mabel wondered, could a woman love so openly and with such abandon?" On that note ....it's still summer here in California..."I'm walking outside for sunshine - to ride my spin-bike under the tree and continue reading. Spain continues to develop new shows for the international market, and Netflix has been pivotal in making the European country, an incredible pool of talent to pull from. From comedies to action films, and, of course, mysteries, it seems Spain can do it all, and do it well. In this opportunity, we are ready to talk about a new mystery show that will surely grab you and not let you go until the final episode. The Snow Girl is the new mystery show from Spain, arriving on Netflix this weekend. with the help of their neighbors; including the amazingly plainspoken and badass character of esther, and their elusive snow child, their solitude will lessen, and these questions will be answered, while a beautiful story unfolds. A big part of getting into a show or movie is to be able to place a veil between the reality of our world and the reality of the show. We should have the chance to believe that what is happening inside the show is real and could be happening in the real world as well. However, the acting and the way some characters are written break this illusion, and you can definitely feel that these are just actors delivering their lines. Maybe it is all about the rhythm in the dialogue, it makes it feel like the actors a remembering their lines instead of just saying them because that is what their characters were thinking.
