The Slight Edge book by Jeff Olson - ThriftBooks The Slight Edge book by Jeff Olson - ThriftBooks

Have you ever met a really successful person? You know whom I mean: that woman with the easy, engaging smile, the one who makes you feel instantly at ease, even as you stand in awe of her accomplishments. The guy who’s always dressed for success, who looks great even when he isn’t trying, and somehow makes you feel better about yourself just being in his presence. People who not only are successful, but also seem to breathe success and fill the space around them with it. They live in beautiful homes, travel to exciting places, fly first class. Are surrounded by people who love them and admire them. Are appreciated, respected and recognized. Happy, healthy, creative and fulfilled. Winners in the game of life. Why do some families have such great relationships, such warmth and fun and caring closeness, while others are perennially angry with each other, so distrustful and distant they might as well live on different planets? Why are some people positive and upbeat while others are miserably negative, constantly complaining and criticizing? We look for the cure, the breakthrough, the magic pill—the medical-scientific quantum leap miracle our press has dubbed the “magic bullet.” But the solution already exists. It always did. Is it magic? Yes—the same magic that caused the problem: the power of daily actions, compounded over time. The magic of the slight edge. Start with a Penny My thanks go to my mother, who has always believed in me; to Renée, my wife of eighteen years and now friend for life, who has always stood by me; and to our precious daughter Amber, who is our proudest accomplishment. They have all been my own personal Slight Edge. A special thanks to Jim Rohn, whose teachings have had a profound impact on me. It’s often his wisdom you hear in these words. To John David Mann, my co-author, who brought his craft, passion, literary magic and good cheer to the project and made our book shine. To John Milton Fogg for his insights and his support, and for helping to get the ball rolling. To Todd Eliason and Reed Bilbray who brought their brilliance to this revised edition. To my close friend Stuart Johnson for helping this book, a dream of mine for many years, to finally come to pass. To Amber Olson who has been the driving force in bringing to light this revised edition. It would not have happened without her passion and Slight Edge persistence. She continues to make me proud by living the Slight Edge in every area of her life. And to all who know they have greatness deep inside them—and that it’s just a Slight Edge away. A special thanks to those already living the Slight Edge philosophy, many of whose stories you will read in this book. They are the inspiration for this revised edition and are living proof of the power of the Slight Edge.

The most powerful part of The Slight Edge is the simplicity and practicality of the philosophy. Olsen summarizes many big ideas we may already know, and shows how to apply them in simple, daily steps. The book is sobering yet uplifting at the same time, because it presents so clearly how we can shape our lives, there’s no longer any excuse not to. This was definitely a nice read for me, and I’m sure it will strike a chord with a lot of other readers as well.

The Slight Edge Summary and Study Guide | SuperSummary

Instead of living in regret, you should take your past experiences and turn them into life lessons. The two sets of people differ not because life treated one better than the other, but because of how they chose to respond to it. Every day you have a choice between actively building a successful life, or staying right where you are. Lesson 2: Learn to appreciate the invisible results of your work to achieve what 95% of people don’t

Now that you understand the principles, tools, and obstacles to the Success Over Time philosophy, you can initiate action towards your goals with full awareness and clear intentions. Use these two steps from Olson to put the power of the Success Over Time Philosophy into action. Step #1: Create Something to Represent Your Vision In this 8th anniversary edition you'll read not only the life-changing concepts of the original book, but also learn what author Jeff Olson discovered as he continued along the slight edge path: the Secret to Happiness and the Ripple Effect. Show Up Be the frog who not only decides to jump off the lily pad but actually jumps. The world is rife with hesitation, the cornerstone of mediocrity. When you talk with people who have achieved extraordinary things and ask them how it was that they accomplished whatever it is they’ve done, it is stunning how often they will tell you some version of this: I just decided to do it. Everything you need to do to transform your life is easy to do. Easy to become health, fit, vibrant, financially independent. A simple positive action repeated over time. A simple error in judgement repeated over time. So easy to do. So easy not to do. Answer: up or down….

The alarm goes off at 6am. Now you face a choice. And that is the good news, because every moment you have in life you face a choice. Where you are right now is poised in the present, with the past stretching far behind and future ahead. First, Olson recommends, write your vision of success out or create a piece of visual art to represent it. For example, make a vision board: a handmade poster full of images that represent your goals (they can be magazine clippings, drawings, photographs, or anything else visual that inspires you). According to Olson, creating a tangible representation of your vision is critical because it allows you to get clear and specific with your goals. The Superachiever That semester, for the first time in my life, I got straight A’s. I went on to business school and graduated at the very top of my class. Fresh out of college, I Beyond simply being a useful way to keep yourself inspired on your path to success, putting your vision and goals on paper has other neurological benefits: If you want to meet your goals, you need to be able to set them. Implementing the three-step goal-setting process can put you miles ahead of the game. It all starts with writing down your goals, then visualizing them daily, and developing an action plan. Successful people form habits that feed their success, instead of habits that feed their failure. They
