About this deal

Well, I never made it on Oprah, but I did write the book. Barnes & Noble and Running Press published it in 2003, and it has since been translated into several languages and sold thousands of copies. And it’s interesting to hear about some of his plans and schemes, like when they hid weed in the amplifiers of touring musicians to exploit a loophole in the laws and processes at customs. Of course, he gets his comeuppance in the end, spending seven years of a twenty-five year sentence at Terre Haute Penitentiary in Indiana, one of America’s toughest prisons. Amber remembers well the difficulties of that time. “There was a meeting of the parents of children [at the school she attended in Mallorca] who wanted to have us excluded because they said Howard’s reputation was bringing the school into disrepute, but the staff said no.” So what was he like as a father? “He enjoyed us as children. He laughed at things we did and said. He told me children’s stories and sang songs he made up for and about me. He was an energetic enthusiast and shared his interests with us – especially music, but also dancing, Monty Python, train sets, ant farms and the latest tech. He never teased us if we were scared but reassured us… He took us with him everywhere he could – round the world, restaurants and markets.

A folk legend... Howard Marks has huge charisma. He sounds like Richard Burton and looks like a Rolling Stone Daily Mail Very enjoyable book and some of the tales of Mark's exploits had me in stitches, as well as finding it genuinely interesting the way he and his associates dodged custom agents and other law enforcement agencies for so long.Howard Marks (born Dennis Howard Marks) was a Welsh author, former teacher and drug smuggler who achieved notoriety as an international cannabis smuggler through high-profile court cases, supposed connections with groups such as the CIA, the IRA, MI6, and the Mafia, and his eventual conviction at the hands of the American Drug Enforcement Administration. At the height of his drug career, he was said to have controlled 10% of the world's hashish trade.

When you follow a strict guideline for living, you often find it hard to adjust to the changes. This makes most nice guys develop unhealthy coping mechanisms, and sometimes, mental health issues. To shed off the Mr. nice guy syndrome, you need to learn to live life by your own rules. You need to make your own way and maximize the opportunities for change that come your way. This is the only authentic way to enjoy life’s success and enjoy the journey. The entire thing reads like a very long summary of a movie plot. Boring, attention seeking and shallow. I was proud to make that statement about myself through much of my early adult life. I was a Nice Guy. I wanted to treat people well, and I wanted to be liked. I couldn’t understand why everyone didn’t have a similar personal mantra.the most True Crime legends ever caught on film, including Roy Shaw, Cass Pennant, Howard Marks, Jason Marriner, Carlton Leach, Dave Courtney and many more". killerbitch.co.uk . Retrieved 26 February 2012. It goes off the rails in the latter half, though, when he gets busted for smuggling. He gets so whiny and upset (calls the DEA evil and says they should all die- the people themselves who work for the DEA, the men on the ground. Not really Mr. Nice at this point) because he broke the law and was caught. That got pretty tiresome after awhile, especially when he started portraying murderers as heroes against the American empire (oh, by the way, all Americans do is watch TV and shoot guns at people and we deserve to be slaves). The French print translation is entitled, “ Trop Gentil Pour Être Heureux: Le Syndrome du Chic Type.” Another thing you need to learn to do is self-assertiveness and authenticity. This allows you to honor your needs, wants, and values without feeling like you are offending others. Self-assertion does not always mean being aggressive or rude towards other people. It simply means being ready to stand up for yourself. This will make it easy for you to say no to things you disagree with instead of doing them to please others. Being self-assertive means that you refuse to be fake just to be liked.

Most men have lost their partners, homes, and jobs from the obsession with being liked. Most nice guys are broken and need support to overcome this syndrome and lead a happier, healthier life, including cultivating a healthy sex life. This is why the no more Mr. nice guy movement was started. I just wanted to say that your book was great. My regret is not having read it 30 yrs. ago. This was truly one of the best books I have ever read. I see hope now.” I enjoyed the show despite it not being something I would normally go to, and afterwards I bought his book. Most unfulfilled nice guys have a problem saying no since this will mean they do not please people. To live your best life, you will need to learn how to say no to activities or ideas you disagree with. Saying no does not make you mean, rude or selfish; it means you are committed to self-care and self-dignity.Eddy, Paul; Walden, Sara (1991). Hunting Marco Polo. Boston: Little, Brown and Company. ISBN 0-316-21056-0.

I recall reading this book c. 15 years ago and being much more impressed than 2nd time round. Marks' autobiography details his life as a marijuana smuggler in the mid-80's portraying himself as an all-round "nice" guy whilst trying to convince us that weed (and hash) should be legalised. The book provides good insight into the lifestyle that accompanies a drug smuggler, glamourising the events that occurred, and also providing what, on the face of it, is a startlingly amount of detail on other individuals also involved in this trade. Mr Nice won the Award for Best Cinematography at the 2010 Kodak Awards. [7] Critical reception [ edit ] This is a tale of two books for me. The first half (and it's long, so it's quite the half) was very interesting, learning about how this guy set up his empire, all the wheeling and dealing, etc etc. I also enjoyed how he and I ended up at many of the same places (Palma, Patapong, etc), which might say a lot about me, hahaha. So, that was all well and good. Many years ago I was a volunteer with St John Ambulance (sja) and we would provide first aid cover at many events including the local theater. One evening I received a call asking if I was free and could get to the local theater asap as no-one had turned up. I rang a friend who was also in sja and asked her to get ready and come as well. We had no idea what the show was we were about to see. Nice guys are not always honest since they are always hiding who they really are to avoid conflict and ensure they are liked and that they are a safe person to be around. Nice guys can be passive-aggressive as they express their resentment indirectly, mostly hurting the people they are trying to please. In addition, nice guys are full of rage from pent-up anger and suffer from fear of abandonment. Without a safe space for expressing themselves, they risk suffering from a breakdown.Given the talent here they should have gone for laughs, and though there are some, they are few and far between. What we have ended up with is a mediocre drama about the relationship between the IRA and a drug dealer - and honestly, even though it is viewable, it's not exactly brilliant. One of the core needs of nice guys is validation. They will seek validation through whatever means necessary. To break away from the Mr. nice guy syndrome, you need to learn to do things without the main goal of getting validation. This can be achieved by starting to do things for yourself. For instance, you can start doing things alone without posting on social media. This allows you to be present at the moment without worrying about what people will think or how many likes your pictures will get.
