About this deal

This book is a change of pace from the prior books with less studying and slice of life and more hands on action — to mixed results. No!” Alex shouted, shooting toward Ripp, waving his staff and conjuring another cluster of air elementals below the plummeting swiftling. This is a very interesting story with detailed crafting and magic. it moves somewhat slowly but it covers a lot of topics in depth. I don’t think the merchants or nobles that shop there would see it that way, and I don’t have time to run to the guild before he cleans up the evidence.”

After his parents died, Alex Roth had one desire: become a wizard. Through hard work, he was accepted into the University of Generasi, the world’s greatest academy of wizardry… As Generasi recovers from the wrath of a demon knight, Alex Roth travels to Thameland to uncover the mysteries of the Ravener. He and his friends have grown in power, ready to take on any threat lurking in the hills of Greymoor, where their university mounts their expedition. Paul shook his head. “The hell’s wrong with you?” He pointed up at one of the fountain’s statues rising over their heads. “Act the fool long enough and you’ll get the fool’s mark. That little sister of yours needs a brother she can rely on.” Hey, why the hell would you think we’d work for you if you’d throw away your own subordinate to keep yourself alive?” he called, drawing on his staff’s ebbing energies to conjure a flight of air elementals around him.Using the last of his staff’s magic, he grabbed a piece of waybread from the bag, then cast invisibility on himself and muttered the incantation for Call Through Ice. Zote is a traveller from outside Hallownest who came to the Kingdom to fulfill a promise. This is ultimately revealed to be a promise of glory for himself. He named his nail "Life Ender" because names supposedly have power. Unfortunately, because it is made of shellwood, it cannot deal damage. While he claims to be the strongest warrior in the land, he is found trapped by weak enemies or claiming the glory of another bug's deeds. He regards the Knight as beneath him and accuses them of constantly getting in his way.

It also reads somewhat like a power-fantasy fanfic. I was expecting a romantic rival for his not-girlfriend-but-sorta-girlfriend. I was expecting plot development for the Mark. It never came. Maybe a third of the book after the halfway point (so most of the second half) felt unnecessary. I was glad for the interesting magic-system building, but I would trade all that in a heartbeat for plot development with the mark and that whole plot. Ultimately, I'm glad I read it, but also glad I skimmed past the several chapters worth of the main character's thoughts and feelings which leant little if anything to the story. Naw, that’s flour, idiot; you don’t recognize one of McHarris’ assistants? By The Heroes’ good graces, I’ve been on night watch with a blind man.” Paul shook his head and peered closer at the flour-encased youth. “Alexander…right? The Roths’ boy? What’s it you have to report?” The young wizard’s heart thundered in his chest: Kaz-Mowang’s life draining magic was hitting him hard, fatigue was building, threatening to force him from the fight. His lungs burned.

Rather than die or serve other Heroes like past Fools, he takes a stand, rejects divine decree…and leaves. With his little sister, his childhood friend, and her cerberus, Alex flees for the university, hoping to research the mystery of the Ravener. He’ll make lifelong friends, learn magic from mad wizards, practice alchemy, fight mana vampires and try to pay tuition. Serves you right, you old bully. That’s for browbeating every helper who’s ever worked for you.” He smirked, tossing his last pay into the fountain. As of sunrise this morning, he no longer needed McHarris’ coin. He turned to say silent prayers of thanks to Heroes’ Fountain—one of the many that had been raised in the kingdom of Thameland. I loved just about every bit of this. In the last book, I felt that some aspects of previous books had all but disappeared, such as the golem workshop. This book felt like a much better balance of new material without forgetting past adventures. Despite her story happening parallel to the game's events, Ellina never meets or runs into the Knight in person during her exploration of Hallownest. The closest instance Ellina comes to encountering the Knight underground is only through noticing the painting of the Knight by Nailmaster Sheo. Ellina is an expanded universe character who appears only within the Hollow Knight Wanderer's Journal- acting as the fictional author of the book. Her book details her experiences within the kingdom of Hallownest and acts as an outside source providing some unique reflections, accounts, and opinions on her findings. Ellina's character beyond her time spent in Hallownest is not explored and is unknown.

He didn’t catch the slight itching on his right shoulder, nor the way the bulging eyes of The Fool seemed to watch him walk away. Armoured Squits usually appear in multiples, they are very fast and usually strike at the same time. Cyclone Slash can protect the Knight from both sides and easily deflect them all. Another outstanding chapter in this ongoing series, the MC is likeable if a little crazed. The rest of the characters have been built up nicely. Nor is Alex stagnant. My other favorite bit of the book is Alex's self-improvement plan. He's connected the dots on a few things after fighting the latest mana manipulation training device, and combined disciplines in a novel way. The weightlifting contests between him and the others are hilarious. Especially when Grimloch gets involved. An instant later, Kaz-Mowang appeared where Alex had been. Golden lightning erupted all over the demon’s skin, as confusion marked his bloody face.

MC felt like a side character in the team that distracts the target till the main character comes swooping down to save him. Because you have sense.” Kaz-Mowang casually raised the trident, golden lightning playing along its prongs. His other hand was levelled at the Thameish wizard, and barbs were already springing up from his palm. “Of course I would prioritise my life over my servants’, what emperor wouldn’t? But you’re competent enough not to need to worry about that, no? I’m sure you wouldn’t have let yourself be caught by hellfire so easily. You’re so…dodgy, after all! Case in point!” I was just considering that.” he glared up at Kaz-Mowang as he skewered another tiashiva like an overripe fruit. “What is your plan?” With the help of Dream Wielder it is possible to get a handful of soul and heal a decent amount afterward. All in all it's a good story, but bear in mind you are going to learn a lot about student life and jump from feel good slice of life chapters to plot changing ones with no warning.Alex Roth froze in the middle of a disaster: collapsed shelving, shattered eggs and flour dust falling like snow in the middle of the bakery. The young man gave an awkward cough and wiped the white powder from his chestnut brown hair. “Does this mean you won’t be giving me this week’s pay?” To that end, I’ve chosen to leave my completed journal behind, in hopes that another brave explorer might use it to piece together the myriad of mysteries of this forsaken kingdom." Dream Wielder allows the Knight to easily gather lots of SOUL for Spells or healing using the Dream Nail. If a slow enemy is saved until the end of a wave, it can be farmed for SOUL, and the Knight can heal to full. Dreamshield provides protection (albeit not very reliable) against most forms of projectiles. It also gives additional reach while standing on platforms or clinging to walls, which is particularly helpful for the floor-less section. After that rough beginning though, the story glistened. While the dungeon fight was a cut & paste job, the battle at the windmill was clever, creative, and novel. There was just a hint of repetition, but it was done deliberately with a nod to the Mark in the process. Which is why it ended up getting its full four stars. The progression of Alex's skills is well thought out and logically developed. There is a glimmer of hope (to be played out in the next book?) that
