About this deal

At the very least, some conversations need to happen in your immediate circle where there is the opportunity for sharing and trust. But it’s important, too, not to have a conversation, and instead listen and say, “So this is what this person believes; I’m going to go and fight.”It’s just as important not to say,“Oh we need to sit down and talk so I can try to get this other person over to my side.” That’s fool-hearted. Foremost, we need to say, “Let me try to understand what this person believes about me, about the world, and then I can decide.”

I’d like to start there. Then I’d like you to tell me, post-election, how you are learning to “love your crooked neighbor with your crooked heart.” I, too, think it’s a bit of an odd expression and, since I live in Nova Scotia, I’m curious about it. Can anybody shed any light on Dunmore’s use of this phrase? 3½ stars. With the photography of Sheri Manson and hidden treasures, an album you'll want to hold in your hand! Includes all lyrics and liner notes.

It sounds like something you’re read a hundred times, but in Dunmore’s hands, it turns into much more. The story is told from various points of views and persons, but is mainly Louise’s story. As the plot builds to its almost inevitable conclusion, one almost wants to look away and not watch how Louise destroys her life.

Crooked Heart by Lissa Evans review – scams on the home front

Noel is mourning his godmother Mattie, a former suffragette. Brought up to share her disdain for authority and eclectic approach to education, he has little in common with other children and even less with Vee, who hurtles from one self-made crisis to the next. The war has thrown up new opportunities for making money but what Vee needs (and what she’s never had) is a cool head and the ability to make a plan. The war's thrown up all manner of new opportunities but what Vee needs is a cool head and the ability to make a plan. On her own, she's a disaster. With Noel, she's a team.Quite wonderful – ‘Crooked Heart’ is beautifully written, moving, funny – just perfect. I don’t usually like novels about the war. I think “What’s the point? – the true stories are so good.” But this one and Evelyn Waugh are way up in a class of their own. Superb. Juliet Gardiner, social historian and author of ‘Wartime: Britain 1939 – 1945′ While the pace of the book is slow, and the story oddly switches perspective and person, it is well worth a measured read simply to appreciate again and again Dunmore's profound talent.
