The touching chapter in memory of Rendell carries the delightful revelation that the queen of crime was quite partial to country music. According to Winterson, “she’d sing a bit, usually country and western, sometimes Handel … ‘Jolene’ medley’d with hits from Messiah”. But it also becomes clear that Rendell provided Winterson with a haven of unconditional support she had never experienced at home: “I wrote my second novel, The Passion, in her house. She had been the Good Mother – never judging, quietly supporting, letting me talk, letting me be me.” Eide, Marian (2001). "Passionate Gods and Desiring Women: Jeanette Winterson, Faith, and Sexuality". International Journal of Sexuality and Gender Studies. 6 (4): 279–291. doi: 10.1023/A:1012217225310. S2CID 141012283. In 2012, Winterson succeeded Colm Tóibín as Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester. [21] Awards and recognition [ edit ]

This was a Traveling Sister read with Norma, Berit, Dana, Nikki, and Holly. The Traveling Sister review of this book and others can be found on their blog at: https://twogirlslostinacouleereading.... After she moved to London, she wrote her first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, a semi-autobiographical novel about a sensitive teenage girl rebelling against convention. [10] which won the 1985 Whitbread Prize for a First Novel. Winterson adapted it for television in 1990. Her novel The Passion was set in Napoleonic Europe. She presented the 42nd Richard Dimbleby Lecture in celebration of 100 years of women's suffrage in the UK [30] I also loved Winterson’s note at the end, telling the story of their final Christmas with Mrs. Winterson (which went awkwardly) and a discussion on why they love christmas and how it gives us ‘ space in our lives for imagination and reflection.’ This was such a fun way to spend December and I loved reading these every day.

It was a day of winter sun that sparkled the city into diamonds and pearls… The windows of the big department stores like magic mirrors into another world.” On 21 December every year, my mother went out in her hat and coat while my father and I strung up the paper chains, made by me, from the corners of the parlour cornice to the centre light fitting.

Much like one of my favorite recording artists, Sufjan Stevens, who gathers friends and family to produce a holiday EP each year as a sort of musical Christmas card, Winterson has been, for a number of years, in the habit of penning an annual Christmas story. Collected here are 12 of those --- one for each of the days of Christmas --- interspersed with 12 recipes appropriate for the holiday season, from “Mrs. Winterson’s Mince Pies” to “My Twelfth Night Fishcakes.”I’m loving these stories and honestly, before this I’d been saying the holiday spirit really seemed to elude me this year. With these, it’s been starting to catch on.

I also enjoyed today's essay, a turkey recipe from Kamila Shamsie (I LOVED Home Fire), and a fun story about a turkey that would imitate human speech. Until he met a tragic turkey end, something kept from Winterson until they were an adult. The recipe today sounds amazing and I’m pretty into how often salmon figures into these. I love salmon. Winterson reflects on cultural differences, such as her wife Susie being Jewish and how that affects their holiday celebrations but discusses how loving someone is about embracing and working with differences, not against them. And now that I’m full of holiday cheer I need to go shovel my driveway because we are getting pounded with snow for the second day in a row. An extended autobiographical article in The Guardian, Friday 28 October 2011: Retrieved 1 November 2011. To counteract this tendency, each story is followed by a recipe embedded in a down-to-earth and often funny memoiristic piece. Some of these are sadder than others, but generally they were a relief after the intense emotionality of the 'fiction' stories. This book has a little bit of everything and was the perfect read for the calm afternoon of Christmas. Jeanette Winterson is completely herself in this book, and I do wonder how it would come across if you were not already familiar with her writing. For me, I am a huge fan, so it worked. Each of the 12 sections include one story and one narrative recipe of some kind. The "story" ranges from memoir to ghost story to love story. The "recipe" ranges from a method loosely described to a specific recipe with measurements. Some come from her family, some from friends, but all have a very traditional feel (even Kamila Shamsie's "turkey biryani.")What a wonderful treat for the Holiday's! 🎄 This novel is a combination of fictional stories as well as personal stories from the author. Winterson also includes recipes to bake for the season. The audiobook version is narrated by Imogen Church as well as Jeanette Winterson. My favorite fictional story is, "Mistletoe Bride"..my favorite personal story is the one told by the author about her childhood turkey named, "Ah-Ha!". This book is comforting, funny, and very reflective. A life lesson that I took away from this book is to always be true to yourself and never let others define who you are. Ritual is a way of altering time, by which I mean a way of pausing the endless intrusion of busy life…The reason I suggest making some of this small meal yourself is because ritual has an anticipatory relevance – we prepare for it, practically and psychologically; that’s part of its benefit.’ I hate the taste and texture of cooked cheese, but Winterson’s attitude to the change of year is inspirational. From the New York Times bestselling author of "Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?" comes an enchanting collection of stories for the holiday season.

In between each story is a recipe and I also loved the stories that went with them. Here Winterson lets the reader into her life, her hardships, her wife, Suzy Ormond and trying to keep her traditions, Winterson loves Christmas, with a Jew who does not celebrate Christmas. Her times at Shakespeare and Company, some tidbits of her family life growing up and her wonderful friendship with the late Ruth Rendell. Personal and interesting stuff here, one gets a sense of who this author is and what she considers important. A perfect Christmas book for December – Christmas Days by Jeanette Winterson Christmas Days – the blurb Miracles are never convenient (the baby’s going to be born whether or not there’s a hotel room – and there isn’t).
