Really, the only wooden vivarium we could recommend for the commonly kept species of chameleon (panther and Yemen, or veiled) is the VivExotic Large Deep Arboreal. Desert environments, on the other hand, have low humidity levels. In desert vivariums, the humidity range should be kept lower, around 40%. This drier environment is most suitable for arid-adapted species where excessive moisture that can lead to health issues. Don't overlook the benefits of a thermostat. It's simply not worth risking overheating your vivarium as this can harm your reptile. You will need to programme your thermostat to ensure that it maintains the correct temperature. This isn't a case of one temperature fits all, and so most thermostats are designed to adapt to a variety of bulbs and set ups. Bigger is always better! The easiest way to do so is by filling the bottom of the habitat with gravel, and then hollowing out a depression to serve as the water reservoir. It's important to research the specific humidity requirements of the specific animal in your vivarium and adjust the humidity levels accordingly to provide them with an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat. Some stores recommend using the Viva+ terrestrial medium for a hatchling corn snake, and it is possible to get enough of a temperature gradient for a very small snake in this size of enclosure. Better still is the Viva+ terrestrial large, although this is still very narrow and not really suitable for long term use. Consistency: Maintaining a consistent misting schedule helps provide a stable humidity environment for the vivarium inhabitants. Consistency is especially crucial for species with specific humidity requirements, such as tropical amphibians.
Most reptiles suitable for rainforest vivaria should be provided with constant access to clean, fresh drinking water. But you must provide this water in a sensible manner and employ good hygiene practices to prevent your pet from falling ill. Importantly, this is really the minimum size available that gives you enough space to get a really good temperature gradient for your dragon; any smaller, and if you get the basking spot hot enough then the cool end isn’t cool at all. Bearded dragons, like all reptiles, must be able to adjust their internal temperatures by moving around their homes. Different types of enclosures incorporate different amounts of screened area. Most aquariums and commercially manufactured enclosures replace one of the glass, plastic or wooden sides with screen. But other enclosures – especially custom-built units – incorporate relatively little screen. Frequency: The frequency of hand misting depends on the specific requirements of the vivarium inhabitants and the environmental conditions. Monitor the humidity levels regularly using a hygrometer and adjust the misting frequency accordingly. In general, misting once or twice a day is a good starting point, but individual species may require more or less frequent misting.
