About this deal

Tormek have been developing their machines for 50 years. This development has resulted in 13 patents and the widest product range on the market. This includes 16 unique jigs and attachments, each one specially designed to easily achieve the optimal sharpness on all kinds of edge tools. The T-4 model is an incarnation within a long line of Tormek water-cooled grinding systems. In common with its larger sibling, the T-8, it is ideal for sharpening cabinetmaking hand tools, knives, scissors and woodcarving and turning tools. Like the larger machine models, the Tormek T-4 Original comes equipped with Tormek's Original Grindstone. It comes supplied with two useful accessories, the first of which is the SP-650 Stone Grader that can be used to keep the stone cutting efficiently as well as changing the surface from a (220g) coarse cut to (1,000g) fine. The equivalent of 2,500-3,000g can be achieved on the leather wheel. The second is the AngleMaster, an adjustable device used to set the correct angle for grinding plane and chisel blades. Magnets on the reverse side of the AngleMaster mean that it is easy to store it conveniently on the steel machine plate.

I would expect the SG-250 to outlast the SG-200. It should; it costs almost twice as much as the SG-200. It comes supplied with two useful accessories, the first of which is the SP-650 Stone Grader that can be used to keep the stone cutting efficiently as well as changing the surface from a (220g) coarse cut to (1,000g) fine. The T-4 is well suited for sharpening chisels, knives, scissors, and smaller tools like carving tools. It also works with turning tools and drill bits, but for plane irons and moulding knives we recommend one of the larger Tormek machine models. Note that a few shapes of gouges cannot be honed with the SVD-186 Gouge Jig on the leather honing wheel due to the compact size of the Tormek T-4. These tools can be honed freehand instead. I believe Jeff Farris' comment about the awkwardness of a 7 1/2" wheel on a T7 is accurate. I do not believe me meant any implications in that statement about the commercial life of a T4 stone. The water trough has been further improved with a screw lift for an easier fitting. It also has a double function magnetic scraper; during sharpening the magnet collects steel particles and after sharpening the scraper will make it easy to clean the water trough. For long tools that may drip water outside the water trough (like chef’s knives and planer blades), you can easily fit the included water chute onto the edge of the water chute.

News:

I am not a big fan of "kits", Tormek or otherwise. A beginning Tormek user who is a woodworker can go far with just the SE-76 square edge jig. Once one becomes fluent with chisels and planes, your own experience will direct you as to your next acquisition. The Tormek T-8 sharpening machine maximises the precision with its revolutionary fully cast housing. This new design, together with a number of elaborated details, gives you the best conditions possible for a successful sharpening with top results. I should note that there is much discussion on the forum about the short knife jigs made by Herman and Ionut. These are certainly useful, and should be included with every accomplished Tormek user's outfit. (I have two, one for the T7 and one for the T4.) My advice for a beginner would be to start with the Tormek short knife tool. It is easy to use. Herman will tell you, quite honestly, that his jig is easy to use, also. I agree. I also think that many things come easier when one has Herman's experience. Once you become fluent with knives, you will probably want to explore making one of Herman's jigs. It's a good jig. Both designs give improved accuracy and precision for easy sharpening on the new Tormek T-4. The T-4 model is the latest incarnation in a long line of Tormek water-cooled grinding systems. In common with its larger sibling, the T-8, it is ideal for sharpening cabinetmaking hand tools, knives, scissors and woodcarving and turning tools.

Millions more rotations? Perhaps Stig can provide some test results from Tormek AB so that we can add some data to this debate.
