About this deal

Atomic Red (75 days)– I first began growing Atomic Red carrots a decade ago and still love to plant this variety in my spring and autumn garden. The roots average 8 to 9” in length and have brilliant red skin and interiors. Flavour/Texture: I love the texture of roasted rainbow carrots as they are super tender but still retain a slight crunchy/chewy bite. It’s not mushy like boiled carrots! Together with the fluffy pearl couscous, it’s a great combination. The orange carrot that we know today was believed to have come about due to hybridizing the yellow carrots brought over from Asia with relatives like the wild carrot and other wild subspecies native to the Mediterranean region. CULTURE: Carrots require well-drained soils, with a pH range of 6.0–6.8. Deep, loose, and fertile sandy loams and peat soils with good moisture-holding capacity grow the straightest and smoothest roots. Pelleted seed requires a little extra attention when it comes to watering, as it performs best with consistent, moderate soil moisture throughout the germination period. An initial watering will split or dissolve the pellet, but if the soil is allowed to dry out before the germination period is over, the seed may receive insufficient moisture for optimal germination.

Step 3: Plant the seeds – Make shallow trenches or holes in the soil, then drop the seeds in. Or, sprinkle them over the top, then gently work them down to about 1/4″ deep.

If you’re thinking you can chop up a carrot and produce several carrot plants, you’re going to be disappointed as well. You can, however, grow a new carrot plant if the carrot you’ve bought still has it’s top! If given the right conditions, a carrot root top may actually grow and produce leafy topgrowth and flowers. The flowers will potentially set seed and you could technically harvest the seed and plant them in your own garden to produce multiple carrots.

When I see multi-coloured carrots, it sparks joy. I have no idea why, but it does! Just so pretty, and when roasted, the sweetness of heirloom rainbow carrots are even more elevated. Jaune du Doubs (72 days)– An heirloom variety, Jaune de Doubs is a good choice for spring or fall harvesting. The slender, tapered roots grow 5 to 7” long and have bright yellow skin and interiors. Some roots may have green shoulders. The flavor is mild when raw and sweeter when cooked. Carrots have been a staple crop in the human diet for centuries! They’re nutritious, filling, and they’re easy to store for long periods of time, so it’s no wonder why they have such a rich history of cultivation. If you wish to store your carrots for a longer-term, then a root cellar can be a great way to accomplish this! Root cellars are typically dark, dry, and cool. Many root crops (like potatoes) store exceptionally well for long periods in a root cellar.Carrots can be canned in a pressure canner or they can be frozen as well. Plant Uses There are countless ways carrots are used in the kitchen. Carrots germinate slowly and need a consistent moist soil to sprout. The top of the soil should not be allowed to get dry, it is true with most veg not just carrots, until the carrot seeds have germinated. Carrots can be slow to come up, but don't be afraid it should be about 3 weeks the most until you see the seedlings. The rule of thumb with watering carrots when they are young is to use less water yet water frequently. Ideally, the soil around them should be watered lightly twice a day, morning and evening. This variety is very broad-shouldered and bright orange. The stubby-shaped roots are ready to harvest in about 70 days and can be grown in heavy clay or shallow soils. ‘Bolero’ To match with the roast lamb we were having for dinner, I wanted to create a roast vegetable dish but not too heavy. So when I saw colourful heirloom rainbow carrots, I knew what I was making to match. AVG. SEEDING RATE: 348,480 pellets/acre at 16 pellets/foot, ¾" spacing in rows 24" apart, or 16,000 pellets/1,000 foot row.

A delightful blend of five different colored carrots all suitable for growth as gourmet baby veggies or full-sized mature roots, our Rainbow Carrot Blend is a treat for every garden. Plant a nice big patch of these beauties and have fun at harvest time discovering the colors you have grown. Wild carrot was reportedly used as a medicinal plantin ancient Rome. It was used as an aphrodisiac and in mixtures to help prevent poisoning. A Roman army physician namedPedaniusDioscordineswrote about both wild and cultivated forms of carrots in 65 B.C. He wrote that wild carrot could ward off reptiles and act as an aphrodisiac and diuretic. The cultivated forms were reported to be more palatable but less used for medicinal purposes.Sow seed thinly in rows, 1cm (1/2 in.) deep, 30-40cm (12-16 in.) between the rows as soon as the danger of hard frost has passed. Try to get about 4 seeds per 2cm (1 in.). Lunar White (75 days)– This pale colored carrot is out of this world! The pure white roots reach lengths up to 8” long and like White Satin, often have green shoulders. We harvest anytime the carrots are 6” long and enjoy this variety raw and cooked. Lunar White has a mild carrot flavor and is popular with kids.
