About this deal

He’s a nice model, too: covered in details and sculpted really well, his flaming axe really helps add to the overall gravitas of the figure. He’ll look smashing at the front of your armies. Auric Hearthguard I wouldn’t say it’s game breaking, more than the game already is, but in general, a larger base for the same points gives a player more board control, and board control (or denying it to your opponent) is one of very few defensive tactics afforded by the rules of 40k. Tactics I employ ruthlessly as a Guard player. The range rulers that come with Fury of the Deep are pushed out of the same perforated board from which one removes their tokens, which means that they are made of card. Each ruler is also printed with a slightly different design, though due to the colour of the print, it’s not so obvious what’s going on in the artwork on each. Simply one is printed with a Fyreslayer design, the other with an Idoneth Deepkin design.

The card range rulers in Fury of the Deep are much more likely to get bent, fray, peel apart, or just break. Whilst it’s cool to have some slightly different rulers, and good to see that waste on the perforated board from which the tokens and rulers are birthed (ew…) is being minimised, if I’m honest I think I’d have preferred some of the typical plastic ones over these. James: Namarti Reavers are a fantastic supporting unit. Taking advantage of Unleash Hell, they can combine their ability with their whisperbows’ Storm Fire – giving them three shots each into a charging unit. The Namarti Reavers are potent when they work in concert with units like Ishlaen Guard .

I am dearly hoping that the impending battletome takes these changes and makes them make a little more sense over all like we saw between Maggotkin Warscrolls and Allegiance Abilities. If the Flamekeeper didn’t hand out a 6+ ward ability I would have hope for an army wide 6+ ward to make some of this make a bit more sense. Competitively speaking this brings Fyreslayers down a couple pegs, an army which was already not competing without allying in Stormdrake Guard for the most part. Auric Hearthguard no longer protecting heroes and doing half their damage now to Monsters takes away one of the best tools the army had for facing Mega Gargants and is sad to see go. Like all aelves, Namarti Thralls possess a physical grace that to other races appears almost supernatural. The Thralls march to war for the Idoneth as the main body of infantry, and it is their task to screen their comrades, then to engage and hold the foe in place. This allows the swifter-moving Akhelians a chance to strike where they deem best. It is a grim prospect, for casualties are often high amongst the Namarti Thralls, but it is a duty they willingly accept. Although they often resent their lower-caste status, the Namarti realise that every successful raid secures more souls for their enclave. This resource is first used to ensure the survival of newborn Namarti, but the excess is used to replenish the diminishing souls of the adults. Such motivation is more than enough to ensure that the Namarti Thralls are caught up in the tides of war, ever eager to capture more spirit-stuff. First things first: grab yourself an Akhelian King. The Slap-King, as he’s known, is a fantastic finesse piece which can reliably delete the enemy’s biggest threats and almost guarantee you the This One’s Mine! battle tactic. Just be careful with your positioning and watch out for Unleash Hell and Stomp. During these raids, the troubled aelves bring the oceans with them in the form of the ethersea. This magical essence allows the beasts of the deep to swim through the air.

There are also all manner of powerful synergies between the Namarti and Isharann characters. Lotann, Warden of the Soul Ledgers, for instance, offers them re-rolls of 1s to hit, while Isharann characters will offer powerful bonuses of their own. The Aspect of the Sea includes an open-faced helmet and is armed with psi-trident and a deep-sea Sceptre. The Aspect of the Storm instead carries Fuathtar, Spear of Repressed Fury and crulhook, and wears a closed helm with a net-styled crest. Up against it is a board control list that’s heavy on bodies and light on permissiveness. There’s not a ton to highlight with this list, as it simply wants to summon a Sloppity and then bog the enemy combat units down in combat and lift them gradually using the Glottkin, GUO & Maggoth lord.

Warscroll Changes

With all the new Idoneth Deepkin models coming out, I was really excited to start painting them. While there are some truly impressive centrepiece models like the Eidolon, I always like to start with the rank and file of the army. This is what you’ll have the most of, so how you paint them will define the look of your army. In my opinion, it’s better to start here, and base your hero and larger model paint schemes off of them, than the other way around. In times of need, the stored souls of fallen Idoneth Deepkin are released and form into a memory of the dead god they worship, the aelven deity of the sea from the world-that-was. These Eidolons of Mathlann take two forms – the Aspect of the Sea or the Aspect of the Storm – and the Eidolon of Mathlann boxed set lets you build either of these variants. Accompanied by an ethereal stormshoal in either form, each different Eidolon has unique features. And speaking of painting, there’s a pair of new colours designed to help you get your new Idoneth Deepkin ready for battle. With the distinctive pale skin tones such a prominent part of the models – especially the Namarti Thralls – we are releasing Ionrach Skin, a new Base colour, and the corresponding Layer, Deepkin Flesh. These plus your choice of Shade will be the ideal way to make your Idoneth look like they’ve just emerged from the sunken depths. A new force is rising in the Mortal Realms. Literally rising, from the ocean depths, in fact. That’s right, the Idoneth Deepkin are here, and they’re looking for souls… The Akhelian Thrallmaster is the second of two new miniatures currently exclusive to the Fury of the Deep box set. In spite of being a build with a surprisingly large number of components, the Akhelian Thrallmaster goes together with ease.

One other interesting thing to note is the rules only work when affected by a specific tide of death, so if you have any abilities that manipulate the tides or grant their bonus to units it’s possible to gain the benefits on “off” turns as well. The new way in which command points are distributed during each battle round also provides the army with more flexibility than ever before. Now each fresh tide comes with a wave of possibilities. Biggest Winners In addition to the new hero, there’s a fair few changes to the included warscrolls. Since the box contains all 3 units Fyreslayers have access to that aren’t heroes it’s a compartively large overhaul for the army. The only change that they share is that throwing axes now hit and wound on a 4+ instead of a 5+ which is a cool little buff to all these units, but pretty minor. Vulkite BerzerkersThis list is a really solid core for anyone looking to start playing BW in fact, as it has a lot of bodies, hammers for days and an incredibly powerful and flexible set of heroes to make the Ironjawz units sing. The Best of the Rest Low Tide –Your units all count as being in cover. This pairs well with Forgotten Nightmares, while Deepkin have some pretty gnarly ranged damage available to it most of your damage is from hit and run strikes, and most of the army has some pretty mediocre saves so you’ll want the help to getting your units up the field. Wont help much against mortal wound spam but against normal strikes with rend, you’ll be glad it’s there. For example, a 1” round base, x 5 models can be stretched 13” long in a straight line, and maintain coherency. When it comes to denying deep strike effects, you get an oval-ish shape 31” long, and 19” deep.
