Under sponsorship of the New York-based Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Reverend Jason Lee (1803-1845) established his first mission in 1834 in the homeland of the Kalapuya, on the lowlands (Mission Bottom) adjacent to the Willamette River north of present-day Salem. The Park Drain Hotel was completed by 1899, when Dunston held a dinner there, to outline his plans for the future. A local newspaper noted that the hotel stood in an isolated position, with only some railway men's cottages and a signal box nearby. Dunston expected that a large village or small town would soon be developed near the hotel, as coal mining began. The house was set to be moved on March 6, 1963, however there was a delay due to a city ordinance prohibiting moving wooden structures into Fire Zone 1. The city granted a temporary variance, and the Jason Lee House was actually moved on March 7, 1963, with photos of the move published in the Oregon Statesman. By 1820, two stone reservoirs and a stone mill building were built into the slope of a small hill above Alamo Pintado Creek, about half a mile from the church. Water was supplied by an earthen ditch or zanja that diverted water from Zanja de Cota Creek more than three miles away. The mill was of an ancient design, using a horizontal wheel powered by a water jet to turn a mill stone attached to its axle. During the mission, he received video calls from Nevine, who first told him how she was doing well, before suddenly falling into a more severe stage of her illness, making her angry and bitter at Mills for not being there for her, although she still said that she loved him.
