About this deal

With this easy curry powder recipe, making curry powder isn’t much of a commitment at all. So you can add a pinch of this and a dash of that and not have to worry about re-toasting and re-grinding small additions of spices as you find your perfect curry powder. Curry powder is a blend of spices that come together to give a warm and robust flavor to whatever dish it is used in.

Beef Mince – I prefer to use an 80/20 beef-fat ground beef mince. You can swap for any mince that you like. I do find the fattier beef gives a better texture to this curry. You can use lean beef mince if you prefer. If making a vegan or vegetarian alternative consider using a medley of mushrooms over plant-based mince as it is higher in carbs. This is possibly the most versatile dish, EVER! While it can be enjoyed on its own as a comforting and filling meal, this mince can also be added as the star ingredient in so many recipes. Vegetables – I use a mix of carrots and frozen peas, but you can add any type of veggies you have sitting in the fridge. Try some potatoes, green beans, grated zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli or shredded cabbage. Seasoning – I use smoked paprika and a mild curry powder like Malaysian Meat Curry Powder. Keens Curry powder is often used in curried mince, and is found in most Aussie household pantries. Add as much or as little curry as you like. You can use a curry paste if you prefer. Red curry paste or even a panang curry paste would work well. Once completely cool, place the toasted whole spices in a spice/coffee grinder along with the remaining ingredients and grind until you get a fine powder. It was during this same time period that British cookbooks started including recipes for “curry sauce,” another British creation. The term “curry” is the anglicized version of the Tamil word kari, which translates to the generic word “sauce.” In Great Britain, “curry sauce” referred to a specific dish that used curry powder. And this “curry sauce” has since become world renowned and conjures up an immediate recognition and expectation of what it will taste like. What is in Curry Powder? Since the term “curry” is so general and not well defined, you will find the spice mixture used to make up a “standard” curry powder differs greatly from jar to jar. Please note that the nutrition informationis based on the mince being divided into 4 bowls, with one bowl being one serve. The nutritional information is an estimate only and does not take into account any additional ingredients or sides served with the mince.

Add some of the other ingredients we mentioned earlier. Whichever sound like they’ll go well with the dish you’re making. Find sources: "Keen's"– news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ( September 2020) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message)

Hello!

You may think the answer is obvious: “Duh. India.” But you may be surprised to know that curry powder doesn’t exist on the Indian subcontinent and is in fact an 18th century British invention. A little desiccated coconut, a grated apple and a chopped banana add the sweetness and flavour which elevate this recipe to a whole new level of retro goodness. The spice blend that the British created was loosely based on the North Indian spice mix garam masala. Cottage pie –top the mince with creamy mashed potatoes and a few handfuls of grated cheese and bake until the cheese has melted and everything is heated through. Make it richer– use coconut cream instead of milk. Or use more coconut milk and simmer to reduce for longer; and

Next, you cook the onion until translucent before adding the curry powder and flour. You stir this over medium heat for a couple of minutes to cook the flour before adding the coconut.

Each region in India, each family, and each dish have their own twist on what spices are commonly used. While you won’t find ALL of these spices in any one Indian masala, they appear in different combinations throughout the country. Traditional Indian curries get their flavor from whole spices that are toasted and ground as needed for cooking (and vary depending on the dish). But, our simple homemade curry powder is an easy way to have easy, instant access to a great starting place for curry flavor. And it uses spices that you probably already have in your pantry! Is Curry Powder Indian? No, but we HIGHLY recommend it. The natural oils in spices is where the flavor is concentrated and these oils are highly perishable once the whole spices have been ground. The pre-ground spices sold in stores have been sitting in jars for a long time and their flavor is bland in comparison to freshly ground spices. How Long Does Curry Powder Keep? As we dive into the possible ingredients below, you will see that the list is quite varied, which will hopefully encourage you to try adding some new spices to your curry powder, or try out a curry that uses toasted spices. What Is In Curry Powder? Think about it like the way an Italian Grandmother would season her meatballs or pasta sauce. There’s no ONE gold standard Italian recipe for either of those. The flavors will vary from region to region and chef to chef.
