About this deal

Publius Papinius Statius , The Thebaid translated by John Henry Mozley. Loeb Classical Library Volumes. Cambridge, MA, Harvard University Press; London, William Heinemann Ltd. 1928. Online version at the Topos Text Project.

So, let’s look again at the logic of verses 5–6, because this is the main point I want you to feel. It turns your world upside down. We see that Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. And therefore, because of that love, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. And that’s what we have to understand. How is that love? How is it love? That’s what we are supposed to see. Glory for Death The reason there is terror is so that Christ could be terrorized. The reason there is trouble so that Christ could be troubled. The reason there is pain is so that Christ could feel pain. This is the world God prepared for the suffering and death of his Son. This is the world where God made the greatest display of his love in the suffering of his Son. I like seeing authors get better and better with each new book, but unfortunately this is not the case with Miss Rina. Maybe she should try NOT releasing a new book every other month?? So we ask: “Why, Lord? Why is the world you made like this? If you are God why is this world so full of terror and trouble?” Wrong Reasons Once health professionals learn from patients about their spiritual or religious nature that might be crucial for their personal health care, they should, just as for any physical or psychosocial symptom, develop a pain treatment plan that reflects appropriate goals of care. As patients’ needs drive the goals of care, it is important that both health professionals and their patients focus on those goals, especially when disagreements between the patient and health professionals are based on conflicts between spiritual and religious and medical needs. 57, 58

I AM SERIOUSLY LOVING this second gen series- it’s truly the best compilation of that various tropes and strengths in the various connected series Rina has done, like the most decadent buffet of all my favorite Rina things. In summary then, the pain and evil of this world do not exist because God is powerless or evil. He is, in fact sovereign and righteous. The reason such a painful and evil world as ours exists is this:

In the middle Ages, pain was considered a religious matter. Pain was seen as God’s punisment for sins, or as evidence that an individual was possessed by demons. This definition of pain is stil embraced by some patients who might tell the health professionals that the suffering is their cross to bear. Pain relief may not be appealing to those individuals who believe in this definition of pain. Spiritual counseling thus may be more of a priority than medical management. 1 Many Hindu believers envision pain as a divinely or dained punishment, or resulting from personal actions. In Islam, it can be punitive or Allah’s will. A popular Buddhist belief is that suffering is the cost of attachment. 2 And when evil things happen to us, the Bible teaches us to speak like this: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)With the fireteam returning to the sarcophagus, Nezarec burst forth from his amber-like encasement, displaying a newly grown body fed on the Light and Darkness supplied by the Guardians. He reveled in his newly-found powers, controlling both Light and Dark, wishing to hear the screams of terror of the fireteam as he killed them. The Guardians, however, proved too strong for his newly born state and he was destroyed, exploding in much the same fashion as Rhulk, Calus and the Tormentors had met their ends. Nezarec reminded the fireteam that even though he had expired, he would always be present in their memories and nightmares, an inescapable impression upon the Universe. I am God, and there is none like me . . . saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.’” (Isaiah 46:9–10) Muslims often believe illness and injury are caused by a higher power (Allah), they attribute their illness, injury, pain and sufferings to Allah thanking for good furtune of being allowed the special medical or/and surgical treatments. 47 In Turkey, for instance, 90% of the population are Muslims. Also, there are some Jews, Christian, and others. Turkey is a unique country both as the majority of its’s citizens are Muslim and also for their commitment to adapt a Western life style. In Turkish sources, little empirical research has explored the specific ways in which religious and spiritual coping may directly impact chronic pain. However, numerous studies demonstrated that there is a negative relationship between spiritually and symptoms related chronic disease ( e.g. pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, hopelessness). There is a positive relationship between spirituality and well-being, life satisfaction and the quality of life. Studies conducted in Turkey are given below. These studies are related to spirituality, pain and chronic illness.

Oh, that we could all see and feel how repugnant, how offensive, how abominable it is to treat our Maker with contempt, to ignore him, and distrust him, and demean him, and give him less attention in our hearts than we do tires on our cars. Overall such a good steamy, dark and twisted time... I mean it's a Rina Kent book so when isn't it🤷‍♀️ I loved seeing more of the characters we know and love from the previous generation of books as well as characters I'm excited to read more about in this series. Sorrowful yet always rejoicing.” Life is not simple. There is pleasure and there is pain. There is sweetness and there is suffering. There is joy and there is misery. There is life and health, and there is disease and death. I remember when I first saw this years ago. I thought, “Okay, I don’t want to overdo that. I don’t want to overinterpret this connection. So I opened Don Carson’s commentary on the Gospel of John, and he lit into interpreters who ignore therefore in this text. I’m not going to ignore it either. It’s really there. It’s not an accident. Jesus knew what this delay would mean. He knew exactly what it would mean. That resurrection has come into the world. That power, that control, that life-giving force is me and I’m here, and let’s show you right now what that’s going to be like. Because I want you, Martha, and all of you to put the connection between Lazarus’s experience and what you will experience. So he continues,My whole life since about 1969 has been devoted to trying to understand, live out, and make plain this sentence: God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in him. And if you wonder where I get this sentence, I get it from texts like this. John 11:4 says this is not about death. This is about the Son of God being glorified. And verses 5–6 in their logical connection say this is about being loved. So, if it’s about being loved and Christ being glorified, then surely I’m being treated well. I am being given joy and satisfaction now and forever by the revelation of that glory. I didn’t notice the post-colon title until writing this review; it is not just a “Legacy of Gods” book, but God of Pain is also a “grumpy sunshine college romance.” It makes it sound a bit sweeter than it actually is, and lord knows that Cray Cray was portrayed as a nearly mute grunter in the last book, so I was pleased to see he had a bit more going on than just Oscar living in the trash can in his head…. This is a very strange love. I admit that. You have to spend your whole life trying to get yourself right side up because we’re born upside down. We’re born with ourselves at the center. And this text is saying that this won’t make sense if you stay at the center of your life. If you are your treasure, this will be insanity. If God is your treasure, this will make sense. You’ll understand what love is because you understand glory. His glory is the center of your life.
