About this deal

Aside from the chainset, the new shifters are the most visible change from the previous Tiagra groupsets. The gear indicator windows have been lost and the size and shape are much like 105. A key difference between Shimano 105 and Tiagra chainsets is that the 150 is quite a fair bit lighter than Tiagra. So, for those riders who are keen to minimize weight, this could be a key consideration. Front Derailleur Are the latest Tiagra rear derailleurs compatible with 105 (5700) 10 sp. shifters? (And vice versa, ie are new Tiagra shifters OK to work with a 5700 105 derailleur?) Tiagra offers excellent value for money but 105 is certainly the better groupset and we’d recommend going for it if your funds allow because of the better brakes, the small weight saving and the upgrade to 11-speed.

edit: just look at side-by-side comparison pictures of older (sis-ratio) derailleurs and the new-line 9000-6800-5800-4700 rds. they hardly have any resemblance in terms of fixing bolt position compared to pivot bolts, and their side plates differ as well. Due to the fact that Shimano uses a 160mm rotor, you won't need to apply lots of pressure to the brakes. please note, that the new rear derailleur geometry follows the design of the 11speed groupsets, and, it is for a longer cable pull with decreased derailleur actuation ratio. Therefore, the shifting is less sensitive to cable stretch and the extra friction of the concealed cable routing of the shifters. The 105 hydraulic STI units for disc brakes are 11-speed, as you'd expect, while the Tiagra are 10-speed. The new 105 R7000 STI units are considerably streamlined compared to both their predecessors and the Tiagra versions. A number of technologies have filtered down to 105 R7000 from the more expensive Ultegra and Dura-Ace groups and Tiagra components are a little heavier. As ever, you pay more for lighter weight. You do get an option with both 105 and Tiagra rear derailleurs for whether you want a short or long cage version. These will be used with different cassettes. However, Tiagra does offer a triple chainset option ( 50 - 39 - 30). If that option interests you, then you will need to consider compatibility with your left-hand shifter along with the front derailleur.

Shimano says both 105 and Tiagra have room for tyres up to 28mm wide. However, the latest 105 R7000 brakes have slightly more drop (the distance from the mounting bolt to the brake pads) than before: 51mm v 49mm. That implies you should be able to run 30mm tyres with the right frame. Whereas Tiagra is compatible with a 10-speed system. The large chainring is good for teeth between 46 and 52.

The Shimano 5800 has gone 11 Speed for the latest incarnation of the 105. The 5800 has been inspired by the innovations of the more upper end Shimano Ultegra and Dura Ace; you can see the technological influences across the design of the 5800 components. More advanced and lighter than its predecessors and with a more eye catching design, the 5800 promises high performance and is one of the latest cycling must haves. The concept of this design is that the twin pivot design will apply equal force through each arm. So the braking will be consistent and deliver equal amounts of power and control.

Tiagra is the highest-grade Shimano groupset that still offers a triple chainset for fans of super-wide-range gear systems The design is the same, both having a four-arm spider. This serves to keep the weight down but the strength and stiffness high.

With a 105 set-up, it does come with a direct mount option - you will need to ensure that your fork and frame are compatible. A direct-mount option means that the brake arms won't need a central bolt to attach to. Instead, they can be bolted straight to the fork/frame. If I was buying a bike with the new Tiagra groupset, such as the Raleigh Criterium Sport, I would be very happy indeed. It does everything you want from a mid-level road bike with only a few very minor quibbles. The biggest decision to make when buying a bike at this price is whether you're really fussed about having the 11-speed of Shimano's more expensive 105, and will come down to your budget. Shimano says: "For the first time in its history TIAGRA supports internal cable routing, which gives the road bike a much more clean and professional look. Along with internal cable routing TIAGRA has also adopted the iconic four-arm crank design which is available in the popular gear combination for entry level riders of 52-36T and 50-34T. With the standard pitch cycle (bolt circle) diameter of 110mm both chain ring combinations are interchangeable because they fit on the same crank set. Nobody needs 11t, who is not racing. And 2t jumps are just incredibly annoying, making it impossible to keep a comfortable cadence. So it looks like you'll pull 3.78mm when you really want 3.92mm on a 10 spd cassette (the pitch tables say 3.74mm and 3.95mm - presumably due to rounding effects)
