About this deal

In the mid–1980s, Ford decided that they wanted to get involved in the upcoming World Touring Car Championship. For this, they needed to develop a new car and thus, the Sierra RS Cosworth was born. To take the Sierra racing, Ford had to build 5,000 road versions under homologation rules. The 'regular' RS Cosworth was already a special car, but then along came the Sierra RS500 Cosworth. An Evolution rule in Group A racing allowed Ford to create an upgraded RS Cosworth, of which they had to produce 500 units, hence the name – RS500. The road-going version of the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 is powered by an upgraded 2.0-litre turbocharged Cosworth engine producing 224bhp. ABS was standard – and excellent for 1986 – but can be troublesome today. Beware if it feels like there’s no servo assistance (a heavy pedal) or the ABS warning lamp on the dashboard stays on after start-up. The cause could be dirty or broken wheel sensors, pump failure, broken wiring, fluid level sensors or blown fuses. Diagnostics is expensive, and most parts are pricey. Other digits on the VIN plate should read N5 for engine, B (right-hand drive) for drive, J for trans, 3 for axle, S2 for trim, and BEF in the type box. In January 1990 the third generation Sierra RS Cosworth was launched, this time with four wheel drive. As early as 1987, Mike Moreton and Ford Motorsport had been talking about a four-wheel drive Sierra RS Cosworth that could make Ford competitive in the World Rally Championship. The Ferguson MT75 gearbox that was considered an essential part of the project wasn't available until late 1989 however.

A total of 500 road cars were produced as this was the magic number required by the FIA for the racing machine to be based. Three-doors had four-pot front brake callipers as standard, but they’re prone to seizing against the 283mm ventilated discs; the symptoms are heavy juddering or pulling to one side. Vibrations felt through the brake pedal and steering wheel are most likely due to warped/contaminated front discs and/or pads – Cossies consume them pretty regularly – but could also come from broken suspension components. Some European tuners, missing a LHD RS500 version, have set up some elaborate versions of the Sierra RS Cosworth for private customers, replicating some of the RS500's specs. A tuning business with experience of this model is Wolf Racing, which was racing with the Sierra from 1986 to 1989 in the German touring car championship Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft. [4] Around 14 years ago, our vendor, a knowledgeable and particularly fastidious enthusiast, decided that he would like to add an RS500 to his Collection. He knew what he wanted but took the precaution of enlisting the help of a friend who was a marque expert. They considered a number of cars, including some lovely examples, but were focused on finding the best RS500 they possibly could. A number of other contenders were rejected until, one day, E378 TKN appeared and was unquestionably 'the one'. Its originality was unmatched, the mileage was nominal (even today it has only covered 5,192 miles) and it had patently been cared for. Buying anything at an auction is an exhilarating experience and it is easy to get caught up in the moment of seeing these fantastic cars, from roaring supercars to our much-loved classics, parading up and down the runway.

The RS500 cars all featured a selection of aerodynamic enhancements that have become synonymous with the Fast Ford - and the desire of collectors from around the world. The most expensive cars ever sold at auction: Ferrari dominates the top 10 countdown but ISN'T number one E449 ERB at home among Paul Linfoot’s collection of racers, mint show cars and customer restorations

Sierra headlinings are prone to sagging (and can be repaired relatively cheaply), as are rear parcel shelves (which cost a bomb); a Cosworth should have a single-piece shelf with a plastic storage box (designed for a non-standard first aid kit). Silverstone Auctions said before the event that although the car had been very lightly used during the vendor's tenure, it was regularly serviced and maintained during this period by Tremona Garage of Southampton, a local specialist widely recognised as being hugely knowledgeable when it comes to Fords from the seventies, eighties and nineties. The new two-way 'ultra' speed camera drivers must watch out for! Here's what they look like and how they work Blimey. Who doesn’t want a three-door Ford Sierra RS Cosworth? It’s the most iconic car of a generation, and even the name sends shivers down the spine of any true petrolhead.
