They replaced the already excellent WH-1000XM3 in August 2018, and since then they’ve been ushered out by the WH-1000XM4, which themselves have been replaced by WH-1000XM5. Sony WH-1000XM3 – The most important current model, the WH-1000XM3 has a headband-style design, and features wireless technology. But wireless connectivity isn't the main selling point with these headphones. Instead, their noise cancellation technology is what catches the eye. As Sony states, these headphones “take you even deeper into silence”, allowing listeners to focus on the music they love, without distractions. The critics have responded favourably, with Expert Review praising the sound quality and comfort provided by these elite headphones, which should be suitable for a general audience.
The older XM3 feature the DSEE HX chip, which upscales compressed audio files such as MP3 to hi-res quality in real-time. The newer DSEE Extreme does that too, but it adds Sony's Edge-AI artificial intelligence to the mix, which claims to allow for a more accurate sound from these files too.
Connecting headphones to a PS4 - If you've got hold of a pair of wireless headphones and want to link them to a PS4, doing so is problematic. The company chose not to include wireless headphone standards as a default option, owing to the lag time between earphones and the gaming console. There are workarounds, generally involving the use of an audio cable between your headphones and the console. But this defeats the purpose of having wireless headphones, making wired versions a better option for gamers (at the moment). But more than that, they've been designed as powerful headphones. A 40mm driver works with a Liquid Crystal Polymer diaphragm to produce excellent bass quality, meanwhile, Sony's DSEE HX technology actively improves the quality of your music straight from the source. In fact, many people maintain that wired headphones actually tend to deliver better sound quality than their wireless brethren. This remains a pretty good general rule, but it's less true that it used to be. Sony wireless models like the WH-1000XM3 manage to beat mass-market wired versions hands-down, and they throw in noise cancellation features as well. I wear glasses half the time, which means the headphones’ cushions don’t form a perfect seal around my ears. To my ears, the Optimizer makes a difference in improving the quality of noise cancellation.
According to tests done by Sony, the 1000XM3 are four times more effective at cancelling noise than the 1000XM2 –an impressive feat considering how well the M2 performed. You're getting one hell of a set of specs for your cash with this tried and tested model from a brand many trust with their tunes. Further controls and customisation options are available via the Headphones Connect app, available for Android and iOS. The options contained within aren’t terribly useful, but if you want to tweak how much noise-cancelling is deployed for certain activities, or disable the auto-off feature, this is where you need to do it.The headphones shed about 1 ounce (22 grams) off their predecessors' design. That might not seem like a big deal, but considering you’ll be wearing these for an extended period of time like, say, a transcontinental flight, every ounce helps. The last aspect of performance worth analyzing is the 1000XM3’s call quality. In several phone calls made with the headphones, the people we spoke to reported that we sounded clear – if a bit quieter – than if we had used the phone’s built-in microphone. This is likely due to the extra microphones Sony has embedded into the headphones themselves. I tried the Optimizer on the ground and the Headphones Connect app gave me a reading of 1.0 atm (standard atmosphere). When I tried it again at 35,000ft in the air, the reading dropped down to 0.8 atm. Clearly the headphones thought there was a difference, but I didn’t hear the NC behave any differently. Both headphones score well on the software side as well. There are specialist apps to accompany both the WH-1000XM3 and the QC35, with features like mixers, equalisers, and pairing. And both models can be linked to smart tech like Google Assistant (although only the QC35 is Alexa-compatible). However, the XM4 take sound quality to another level, producing a wider soundstage and uncovering even more layers of detail than the XM3. Arguably the biggest changes to the Sony WH-1000XM3 compared to the XM2 are found in the design of the headphones: they’re lighter than the previous model and more form-fitting as well. The overall shape and look of the Sony WH-1000XM3 clearly mirror the WH-1000XM2 and the 1000X before them. Any why not? The original was an elegant yet ergonomic design that looked and felt good. But there are a multitude of tweaks that you’ll miss at a glance. The WF-1000XM4 deliver the goods in the sound quality department as well. Like their predecessors, they communicate dynamics in an enthralling fashion. But they nail every other important element of musical presentation, too.
High Quality at a High Price
Add all of the ingredients together – the increased comfort, improved noise-cancelling and serious audio ability – and you have a close to perfect pair of noise-cancelling headphones.
When linking headphones to stereos, it all depends on how advanced the sound system is. If it can handle the same wireless standard as your headphones, there should be an easy way to pair the two. Long Battery LIfe
In 2016, Sony’s MDR-1000X came out of left-field to challenge Bose’s dominance in over-ear noise-cancelling wireless headphones. They proved a big success and a solid rival to the finest wireless headphones Bose offered. The WH1000XM3 also adapts noise cancellation automatically for your current activity, cleverly, and this is genuinely useful – it lets in a little bit of nearby traffic noise when you’re walking in town, or chatter directed at you when in an office. You can tweak each one for preference, or turn it off. While the noise cancellation impresses, sound quality is where the XM3 really come into its own; this is a pair of headphones that offers a wonderfully expansive sound. The bass is deep and impactful, the mids are as capable of capturing the smooth tones of orchestral strings and wood instruments as they are the crunch of overdriven electric guitarsand the high-frequencies sparkle with clarity. Despite noting the subtle upgrades, you're probably still asking yourself why you'd pay extra for the XM4. Well, here's one reason: they feature Sony's very latest audio processor – the DSEE Extreme.
