About this deal

Yeah. They said, "We're keeping the name. We're Sisters Of Mercy." Andrew rushed into the studio, and recorded an album and put it out as Sisters Of Mercy. He's like, "I'm Sisters Of Mercy!" Basically, he did everything. There was a bass player, Patricia Morrison, but he wouldn't let her do anything. Even on the album you see his face and Patricia's face is off in the clouds kind of fading away. Again, this is where the contradictions appear. If the early versions of ‘This Corrosion’ were an extension of Gift, Eldritch’s employment of Jim Steinman with no apparent irony found him embracing the very thing he’d supposedly been taking the piss out of all these years. The uber-producer makes his presence felt on Floodland’s opener, ‘Dominion/Mother Russia’ wherein the masses voices of the New York Choral Society are used to grand effect once more. Very happy with the pressing, flat/centred and quite punchy throughout. Sounds better than the remastered cd I have (Rhino box). Eldritch refined his songwriting by drawing common threads between all acts of barbarism, whether artistic or romantic or political. The band’s most recent album, 1990’s Vision Thing, is named after a term George H.W. Bush floated to describe the elusive quality that makes a candidate’s platform feel marketable. Eldritch—whose plan-B if the music thing didn’t work out was to study language at Oxford—always seemed attuned to this type of rhetoric. The group’s first greatest hits collection was called A Slight Case of Overbombing, his attempt at nailing the tone himself: the way that overly confident people present their dangerous ideas to a receptive audience.

a b Sodomsky, Sam (29 October 2023). "The Sister of Mercy: Floodland Album Review". Pitchfork . Retrieved 29 October 2023. This became what is generally recognised as the first real Sisters line-up. It began with the Doktor/Eldritch/Marx/Adams incarnation of the band playing a gig in the Riley Smith Hall of the Leeds University Union building in early 1981. Since nobody can remember the exact date, for historic purposes the band and fans have often celebrated the anniversary of the concert of 16 February 1981, in Alcuin College, York which was the band's second gig; [8] however, during this time, the band did cycle through two fourth members: guitarists Tom Ashton and Dave Humphrey. [11] Later in 1981, Ben Gunn was recruited as the Sisters' second guitarist. Eldritch's melancholic baritone, Craig Adams's pulsating bass, Doktor Avalanche's beat and Marx's flowing guitar led the band to early underground success. In 1982, the band recorded the "Body Electric" b/w "Adrenochrome" single for the CNT label. [8] Floodland is no joke. But there is a kind of humor to the way the whole thing played out. Prior to its release, when Eldritch heard that Hussey and Adams were starting a new band under the very cool and very official-sounding name the Sisterhood, he had no other choice but to rush out an album under this moniker before they could. And so the true predecessor to Floodland is actually 1986’s Gift, Eldritch’s sole album as the Sisterhood. It is nobody’s favorite record in his catalog, and it’s what Larry David might call a “ spite album,” a project whose entire purpose is to inconvenience someone else.

Regarding the title Floodland, Eldritch realised that, after writing all the songs for the album, the theme of water came up repeatedly. He attributed the theme's recurrence to the amount of water within Hamburg, where he was writing these songs. [18] Michael Bonner of Uncut viewed Eldritch as casting himself in a role where he is a "jaded observer, watching cynically as he and the world slouch towards Armageddon," adding that the songs are bonded together by "images of the apocalypse that straddle the gap between the personal and the political." The Sisters of Mercy ceased recording activity in the early 1990s, when they went on strike against East West Records, who they accused of incompetence and withholding royalties, and had pressured the group to release at least two more studio albums; instead, the label released the album Go Figure under the moniker SSV in 1997. Although the Sisters of Mercy were eventually released from their contract with East West, they have never been signed to another label nor released any new material. They have continued to perform new songs live. Heavily reliant on keyboards and processed beats, it found Eldritch pouring scorn on the former bandmates who’d attempted to cash in on The Sisters of Mercy’s name via singer James Ray when he croons, “What you have lost can never be found/ Words are just dust in deserts of sound/ Everything is lost and your trust lies broken/ And the truth is found.” Elsewhere, opener ‘Jihad’ finds Patricia Morrison intoning the introduction, “Two, five, zero, zero, zero”, supposedly the amount of money The Mission paid in legal fees over the struggle for The Sisterhood name.

The group has released three original studio albums: First and Last and Always (1985), Floodland (1987), and Vision Thing (1990). Each album was recorded by a different line-up; singer-songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machine called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity throughout. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in the Sisterhood, a side project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members. Around this time, Bricheno had begun focusing on his other band, XC-NN (originally, CNN). Meanwhile, Bruhn released his debut solo album, Broon. Bruhn claimed the songs on the album were offered for the next Sisters release, only to be rejected by Eldritch. [16] Eldritch denied these allegations, saying he was never offered the songs. [20] The band has yet to release any new material, but in 2017 they embarked on a European tour in August and September. [21] [22] The band has performed thirteen new songs during concerts held between 2019 and 2022, such as "There is a Door" and "Show Me (On The Doll)," but has yet to make studio recordings available. [23] Since 2012, some of the shows featured a guest appearance by the Irish singer Lisa Cuthbert who performs her cover version of "This Corrosion" on piano. [24] [25] Influence

The music press reported the break-up of the band on 2 November 1985, announcing that "the Sisters of Mercy were down to singer Andrew Eldritch and his faithful drum machine [ Doktor Avalanche] this week after guitarist Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams left the band. Although this has scuppered recording plans for a new album this month, Andrew now intends to record the same album in the New Year and could well be using Wayne as a session guitarist. [...] Andrew has also approached former Gun Club bassist Patricia Morrison—now in Fur Bible—to play on the album, but it's not yet known whether Andrew will continue with the name Sisters of Mercy." [5] Eldritch had no intention to carry on under the disformed band's name, as members who left to form the Mission had an agreement with him that the name the Sisters of Mercy would be used by no one after the break-up.
