About this deal

In "She's Come Undone," an ambitious, often stirring and hilarious book, Mr. Lamb gives his vociferous heroine truly heroic proportions, in both the physical and the psychical sense. Much of the attention of She's Come Undone has focused on a male writer's ability (or inability) to write authentically in the voice of a female character. What other male fiction writers of the present and/or the past have experimented with women's "voices'? What female writers have written in the voice of males? Is it appropriate for fiction writers to give themselves such "gender-bending" assignments? Is it politically correct? Is it a more socially acceptable task for writers of one gender than for the other? The song was released in March 1993 as the second single, after the international hit “Ordinary World”, from the album and it had a considerable success, entering in the top ten in all the most relevant charts in the world and reaching number one in Israel. “Come Undone”, as well as the previous single, is supposed to be a significant marker of Duran Duran’s entry in adult contemporary radio format.

Is Dolores the way a man saw women in crisis in the sixties? I don't want to be offensive, but if he saw white women like this then what a sad commentary. If he wrote this as all inclusive of women, in general, then he was dead wrong in his guesstimation. Different strokes for different folks. The structure of She's Come Undone keeps the reader engaged throughout, as each chapter reveals new aspects of Dolores’ life. Dolores Price - is my first choice - I want to get inside her head - My second would be Dante - I want to see what all the fuss was about. By now, Dolores is in her late 30s and is depressed by the idea that she will never be a mother. Thayer, now her husband, takes her on a whale watching vacation to help her feel better. While on the boat, Dolores muses about her past and future. Dolores decides that her life, as it is now, is wonderful and is enough. The novel ends with her being the only one to see a whale breach the ocean, symbolizing her newfound peace.

Wally Lamb

A tremendously likable first novel about the catastrophe- marked childhood, youth, and mangled adulthood of a tough-fibered woman who almost beaches herself in guilt and grief. Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn August 16th 1969, the Guess Who performed "Undun" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...

Elena is tortured for the first time in the series by Damon and Stefan. She takes everything they do to her without complaint, and doesn't break down as they had hoped. I think... the secret is to just settle for the shape of your life takes...Instead of you know, always waiting and wishing for what might make you happy.”Best: The story is excellent. This author creates very believable characters. Least: Linda Stephens' performance.

So my first foray into the work of Wally Lamb was a huge success. Next up is I Know This Much Is True that I am reading with a Goodreads friend – can’t wait to dig in! I will surely read more from him, but with a more critical eye now that he's fallen off the first impression pedestal I've put him on. A heroine to cheer for … This supremely touching journey to adulthood may remind you of "The World According to Garp" and other sagas of emotional liberation."I bought the unabridged audio version, so I didn't miss a thing from the print version, which we were reading as a book club. It was a long book, so being pressed for time, I needed to be able to be able to get through it while doing things that I wouldn't be able to do while "reading" and vice versa. I live in SF. I have scores of gay friends. I guess with my life experience, I just don't see the monogamous mid-life gay couple as the ones getting HIV. Numerous jazz and other musicians have recorded "Undun". These include Phish, Hennie Bekker, [10] Steve Cole, [11] The Phil Dwyer Septet, [12] Kurt Elling, [13] Ranee Lee, [14] Sophie Milman, [15] Hugo Montenegro, [16] and Alexander Zonjic. [17]

When this book was released some critics labeled it as humorous or hilarious. I did not think so (except the joke about Parkinson’s Disease). As a youth he's a loving and devoted Christian, when Dolores meets him he's a womanizing playboy but becomes an attentive thoughtful, boyfriend, then he turns into a critical and selfish spouse, then a cheat, then a virtual pedophile. So if you are only somewhat depressed but not quite suicidal yet, this is the book for you. Everyone else should stay away in droves. Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Beached like a whale in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally rolls into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before really going belly-up. She's Come Undone is an honest exploration of how trauma can shape our lives, but also how we can eventually come to terms with our pasts and move on with strength.Update: I found an old review I wrote about this book for an online book club I used to be in. I clearly hated it. Here it is, more or less in its entirety. If you were to take all the cliches' present in a difficult upbringing--physical and sexual abuse, sexual experimentation, growing up the fat kid, making continuous bad choices, demonizing men, dealing with someone with HIV, and then write a book with polarized characters who rarely find a common ground, you would end up with this book.
